Why This Show is Garbage

I finally just got around to finishing S3. Don't ask me why I watch a show I hate, I just do.

S2 at least had a solid plot, but S3 is a fcking turd especially with "what are Flint and Barlow's backstory and motives" mystery done with. Basically this season they've double-downed on the worst things about the show. You can tell it's made by network people not prestige cable people. Excluding the rare action scenes (which aren't very good either), every scene features dull static shots of characters exchanging dull, mechanical, unnatural dialogue filled with run-on sentences meant to crudely advance plot development or very simple character development.

85% of this show is a scene with two characters (shown with static, STDV-friendly closeups of their talking heads) having a heart-to-heart:

Rogers and Eleanor having a heart-to-heart.
Eleanor and the chamber maid having a heart-to-heart.
Jack and Anne having a heart-to-heart.
Max and Jack having a heart-to-heart.
Max and Anne having a heart-to-heart.
Max and Rogers having a heart-to-heart.
Max and Eleanor having a heart-to-heart
Rogers and Jack having a heart-to-heart.
Flint and Silver having a heart-to-heart.
Flint and the queen heaving a heart-to-heart.
Silver and the queen's daughter having a heart-to-heart.
Vane and Blackbeard having a heart-to-heart.
Vane and Jack having a heart-to-heart.

These people need to watch a season of Breaking Bad or The Sopranos and learn how cinematic pacing and camerawork is what separates the greatest shows in history from the run-of-the-mill network trash that this show represents.

reply

Nah, admit you love it, 'cause I can tell that, deep down, you really do.

reply

I think you watch it because you secretly love it. I openly love it so no harm there!! It is a great show full of great conversations.

reply

I agree, I liked season 1 but seasons 2 & 3 are possibly two of my favourite seasons of tv ever and I get as much out of the "heart to hearts" as I do out of the action scenes

reply

While I wouldn't call the show "garbage," all those "heart-to-hearts" were FRUSTRATING to sit through last season! That's probably the biggest problem with the show. Well, one of the bigger problems anyway.

Unfortunately, I think it will continue because (and this is just my thinking) I think the writers see it as a great, poetic, damn-near Shakespearean writing. They'll probably see any criticism of it as people not understanding or just wanting pirate action.

Two out of three seasons had too much talking, season 3 taking it too far, while season 2 was great in spite of it. I bet Season 4 will be more of it.

STARZ needs someone at the helm that can HBO-ify their shows.

reply

You nailed it! I've tried to give this show multiple tries but it just bores me to tears. And yes every scene only features two characters having a pointless conversation. There's no way I can binge watch this mess. There's nothing going on.

reply

That was season 3. Jury's still out on Season 4, although they do still use a lot of words to say simple things.

reply

I think the OP really nailed the crux of the problem w BS: these are simple pirates, whose sole purpose is to plunder, yet they are shown in interminable tete a tetes discussing arcane plots more befitting Machiavelli, chess grand masters, Kissinger, or the Borgias. The incessant private dialogues are totally out of place w 1700s pirate reality.

For those expecting a more streamlined, plausible narrative, S4e1 did not bode well at all...

It's not my goddamn planet. Understand, monkey boy?

reply

Yes, a lot of us had issues with those philosophical tete-a-tetes last season.

reply

It isn't. End of thread.

you mean like every drama show ever?? lol

If i had $1 everytime i had no clue what was going on, id ask people why they were giving me dollars

reply

No, not like every drama show ever. I love this show and look forward to it every weekend and would never call it garbage. But this complaint about the "dull, mechanical, unnatural dialogue" is a LEGITIMATE complaint. Dialogue in most shows are a little shorter, quicker, more like real people chatting.

Here's an example of what "Black Sails" does that's so frustrating. Rogers tells Eleanor (with dramatic pauses):

When I informed Sarah of my intent to formally end our marriage, I did not know what the consequences would be.... I didn't imagine they would be significant... We'd barely spoken in years. Her reaction was more significant than I'd anticipated.

Great. But it could've been said faster, with fewer words. Now take that kind of dialogue and multiply it by 10, and you have Season 3 and some of Season 4's first episode.

I have to accept that this is how these characters are forced to talk by these writers, but it IS rather dull (get to the point!), mechanical (static shots, emotionless delivery), and unnatural (who talks like that, least of all pirates?).

Still a fan, though.

True enough. I do find Woodes Rogers and Elanor to be incredibly boring and half the time I zone out. Max and Ann Bonny as well though they've been getting progressively better. That being said, they often nail the dialogue. Silver and Flint's dialogue is mostly excellent.

Overall, it's not perfect but there's so much good to be had that their's no sense in getting hung up on something like this. If a minor flaw such as this distracts the viewer to the point where he/she gives up on the show, then I wonder if the viewer can tolerate any show. Even shows with some of the best dialogue suffer from this from time to time. GOT and Breaking Bad certainly had their share of boring and mechanical dialogue. Just look at the recent Arya arc and you'll see what I mean. You have to expect that it occurs when you have dozens of hours of content. Black Sails had a limited budget so you can't expect the best actors and biggest set pieces. Despite that, it has some of the very best production, cinematography, character developement, costume design etc.

reply

But it's NOT a "flaw." It's intentional. The writers WANT to make their dialogue sound like this. They think it's fanciful or poetic or deeply philosophical or something. While other shows may slip on it once in a while, "Black Sails" slips on it more often than not. And the show took me to the brink of frustration last season, especially when almost ALL the characters talk like that.

EDIT: Woodes Rogers especially has been saddled with a lot of clunky dialogue where he's explaining the plot. And the scene when Eleanor blathers for a bit before saying "What the f happened back there?" should've STARTED with her saying, "What the F happened back there?"

Contrast that with GOT, where every character has their own way of talking.

Despite that, it has some of the very best production, cinematography, character developement, costume design etc.

Mos def. A visual treat.

reply

Yeah I like this show but the dialogue is just dreadful. Whereas Game of Thrones's dialogue is concise and uses connotations, the dialogue in Black Sails always seems to be long-winded as if they are trying to explain things to the viewer. The problem is, at least for me, I don't care to pay close attention to every little twist and turn... and it definitely makes the dialogue sound completely unnatural.

reply

You people are all insane.
