Eight years of Obama (season 4 spoilers)

In Season 4, when some of the characters are trying to form a group from all the "gangs" to take down Piscatella, the head neo-Nazi (can't think of her name, the one Watson punched in the last episode) says something like "Black people can't lead" and Taystee says something like "How about eight years of Obama?" in response. But isn't this series set in 2013? So there would only have been like 5 years of Obama at that stage. Seems like a goof. Unless Taystee meant that since Obama had won a second term, there would be 8 years of Obama, but that seems an odd way to put it.

Not only that, but when did the Black Lives Matter movement take hold? It seems like such a recent idea that might not have trickled in to the inmates awareness yet. I think since New Year's has passed it's supposed to be 2014, but that is still a little odd phrasing as you say.

Another weird thing is in Season 3, Piper's brother compares her to Walter White and she doesn't know who that is and he acknowledges she missed the whole Breaking Bad phenomenon from being inside. But if she went to prison in early 2013, Breaking Bad would be 4 seasons in. Even if she didn't watch it and hadn't heard of WW, it's odd that her brother thinks the reason why is because she's been inside.

They mention a lot of current events that aren't in keeping with the timeline.

Good points guys. I hadn't considered this. They throw the timeline out the windo just to be trendy and topical. Pretty lame.

isn't this series set in 2013?

Why are you so sure it is set in the past? I always assumed it was set in the present. For me the latest season was set in 2016.

reply

It started in the present at the time, but based on the amount of time Piper is supposed to be there, real-life time has moved faster than the time she has spent there.

reply

I don't think the date and time makes much difference to the show, does it? I mean it's not like it's a historical drama that needs to get it's dates right.

reply

I agree. I was just explaining why people are thinking it takes place in the past.
