alcohol was used a lot during the movie , almost in every other scene

just watched the movie and alcohol was a very big part of the film , either w/ the guys at the bar , w/ her husband on the steps , beer & pizza in the office , or wine on the plane ....etc it seems like a cheap gimmick or someone w/ a drinking problem

reply

Or it could reflect that alcohol is a huge part of American culture.

reply

Human culture?

reply

The movie takes place in America, so the rest of the world is immaterial.

It's not universal anyway. Go to Saudi Arabia and try and order a drink.

reply

Do you believe there is zero alcohol in the kingdom? Just need to ask the right person. And the history of human culture is progressed/marred by constant alcohol.

reply

The standard isn't "zero alcohol". What you attempted there is called a "straw man argument". You argue against an assertion that was never made.

The pertinent part is the "huge part of the culture" bit. Alcohol is not a huge part of Saudi Arabian culture.

reply

Go to Saudi Arabia and try and order a drink.
LOL. Have you ever met any westerner who has lived in Saudi? They all report that their lives revolve around planning their next drink (and they drink as much or more as the Jules character in this film.

Again. The pertinent part is the "huge part of the culture" bit. Alcohol is not a huge part of Saudi Arabian culture.

I can't be sure of this, but I think directors will work backwards sometimes to make sure that the plot makes sense. When Jules is doing tequila shots, it will look very out of place if that is the only time she is drinking. That being said, she may have also had a drinking problem due to the stress she was under.

I agree, there was alcohol in a lot of the scenes.

reply

When she's throwing up the tequila she says she hasn't done it since college. So, less of a drinking problem, more of a 'my husband is cheating and I don't know how to cope' problem.

There are few urban movies or tv shows that show a great deal of drinking. An episode of "The Americans" showedagent drinking at FBI headquarters. What show doesn't have a business exec offering a visitor a drink in his office?
I'm in the business world. I rarely see people drink at lunch. I've never seen a liquor bottle in any office.*
Why all the drinking on in movie and tv shows? My suspicion is product placement fees. If there's a box of Kellogs cereal in kitchen, the manufacturer paid for it. When it's a generic drink or a glass of beer, I suspect the placement is paid for by a distillers or brewers trade association. When an alcoholic sees a drink or a beer on tv it triggers an immediate response to consume one themself. More sales, more profits.

reply

You're right about that... I think Jules was drinking a lot because of her marital stress and stress at work.

reply

What? How is people drinking in a movie "a cheap gimmick or someone with a drinking problem?" You must be trolling. My bad.
