Am i the only one struck by the MISCASTING of Anders Holm? - The Intern (2015) Discussion

I came to the threads looking for this. Completely agree. He looked like a mess the whole movie and drove me crazy (mind you, I'm a male of around the same age). I don't know if they were going for the modern, hipster male or something? The big emotional resolution scene between him and Anne at the end just completely fell flat for me because of him, and then the movie was over... shame.

I searched boards looking for this too -- nothing, Im the only one, now you. yes, that ending was PATHETIC. who would WANT him? i saw it as her chance to FLEE him! would have made SOOOO much more sense for her to, having been supported and advised by wise old new bff, to let BLAH husband GO.what a mismatch. really bothered me the entire movie.

Frankly im not getting why everyone loves this movie. Hathaway is Audrey Hepburnish at moments, & her clothes and styling totally fabulous, but that's all she wrote for this flick. Deniro looks as if he is in a constant state of constipation. Hang it up Rob, unless you can do something besides that now!

not even close. she got a rise out of him right at his open desk in the office with some very basic touch. they were showing you how much of a man he still is (with humor)! you chose to ignore it.

if that weren't enough, her drunken speech to the break-in team about how much of a man he is and what little boys the rest of them are, was there for a reason.

also, his wife died. widower != gay

I totally agree. Would have been way more interesting if DeNiro played a grizzled Jersey truck driver who teaches Hathaway how to be human again. All this $3million brownstone angst. So reminded me of THIS IS 40, without any humor. ZZZZZZ.

I had to tune out his entire presence in the movie to enjoy the movie. .

Sometimes women I respect love men I don't find at all appealing -- it was like that.

I felt that his nothingness was more contrast to Deniro.

Probably because she loved him for who he was (or who she thought he was) as opposed to looks....

You are so right about Hataheay's look in this movie. She was fabulous!

In that scene towards the end when she emerges from the SF office building and she's wearing those sunglasses! I mean, damn girl!

totally agree. this guy was supposed to have been a big player in the world of marketing / advertising. I got none of that "marketing hot shot" swagger, presence, energy, or chutzpah from this performance. Could have been bad directing?? Or bad casting??

Cause everyone is marketing is exactly the same? I am pretty damn sure there are timid, kind people in marketing and these days, hipsters

He looked so scruffy, like he'd totally given up on himself and the fact that he was so weak was a turnoff, but perhaps, that might be the point. Taking over parenting and doing everything by himself left him feeling totally discouraged and feeling unfulfilled.

I think that was exactly the point. As far as the "no chemistry" criticisms, that may have been on purpose either. When he first appeared, I wasn't sure if he was an ex, their nanny, or what. They were leading such disparate lives at that point, they didn't have chemistry.

No chemistry between the two, and the guy had no screen presence at all. Having him in the role was very distracting - more distracting than the cliched precocious kid.

His character and his acting were god awful. Totally ruined an otherwise decent movie. I was hoping he'd only be a very minor character, but sadly, he was in the entire movie.

Television is a vice; film is an addiction.

The first time I saw him in the movie, I got the feeling like he was somebody who just walked on set accidentally. He didn't fit at all.

I was fine with him until the scene where he was to apologize for cheating. He didn't even seem apologetic or sad. The most I can say was that he was intense. That's not enough.
I always assumed they would stay together though so I wasn't disappointed by that.

He's only an ok actor, but he's damn cute. I think acting along side people like Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro can definitely show actors' weaknesses.

I kept getting him mixed up with the scruffy guy that ended up living at the DeNiro character's place for awhile. They kind of resembled each other. And I didn't think he was worth fighting for as Hathaway's character seemed to think he was.

It bothered me at first, but then I realized what the director is trying to do. The cliche roles of husband and wife were switched in this film. You can see it in the shots where she's sitting upright in bed with the laptop, asking for sex, while the husband is dozing off in exhaustion from housekeeping (or cheating). She is the "alpha", the provider, the go-getter, while he's the "beta", soft-spoken, care-giver in the relationship. Again, normally it's the other way around.

If he was played by some super-suave Jon Hamm "Mad Men" kind of guy, the audience would be waiting for her husband to "SAVE" her.

Or I don't know, maybe it would have been funnier seeing a Jon Hamm-type play the housewife.

This actor doesn't have a "style". He really is in the wrong business. Can't act, looks sloppy/uncomfortable on camera, doesn't have appeal, does not evoke sympathy. I would NEVER watch anything if he were the main character. Otherwise, this was an enjoyable film. How did he get into show business??
