This was terrible....

So I watched the DareDevil show that came out not too long ago and decided to give this one a whirl as it had been the talk within a few circles. I am not sure what I am missing but so far the show has been quite terrible. The production is good and I don't particular have problem with the actors but that script is horrible. It feels like an angsty teen's disjointed ramblings and Jessica Jones just comes off like a overtly emotional and a floundering idiot. One other show i remember had the same issue only it was even lower budget which was Powers. Whoever, this Bendis guy is, he needs to hire writers.

You understand that Jessica Jones is also a rape survivor and suffers daily from the PTSD that resulted from that and Reva's death?

reply

About that... maybe its because I am not familiar with the comic that the ideas are not telegraphed well enough. But to me Jones didn't seem anything like a rape victim. Atleast to me it seems a bit odd for a rape victim to engage in random intercourse with a stranger and thattoo multiple times. I initially thought she was talking metaphorically (violating her mind) but beyond her adamantly making these accusations...

As far as her being a an ex superhero, thats hard to buy as there is nothing about her character that even remotely shows that she is capable of taking immense responsibility. Her entire quest to take down Kill Greaves feels like a dumb, unplanned, reckless attempts one after another. At no point I felt like she was in control of the situation... and its not because Kill Greaves is such a conning foe but that Jessica is pretty stupid and her cast of friends are equally dimwitted.

I don't know. This is the second show I am watching with this Bendis fella being behind it and they both have have the same amateurish writing. If Dare Devil is one of his productions then I would say he needs to hire whoever he did for that show. Everything about the show feels forced and disjointed.. which s an irony seeing as the kind of pedigree DD brought to the table.

If you're truly curious about it, there's an article written about Jessica Jones by someone who has survived similar things in her own past.

http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-ways-jessica-jones-perfectly-portrays-being-stalked/

It's not for the faint of heart though, so I'd only read if you're truly wondering about how a real rape victim might act. Of course, every person and situation is different and with JJ we have to add the fact that she's also super powered which changes things - so it's just one person's opinion.

I found the article interesting though as well as the author's point of view.

Actually many rape victims do begin randomly having sexual intercourse. Not all of course.
They are broken after the rape.

reply

I suppose you are right, erratic behaviors is part of the deal when you are a victim of such trauma but I still think the writing was real bad at telegraphing the idea across without Jessica having to literally yell it out at some point. I don't know, this just didn't get any of its points across well enough for me to care. Especially with her "friends".

It should be noted in the comic, Luke wasn't a stranger to Jessica in the comic before they had sex. They had known each other well and had close platonic/working relationship for a long period. Cage was a confidant Jessica would unconsciously go to when she was on a booze binge or a downward spiraling depression.
Luke Cage was Jessica's safety net/pressure release valve
Jessica is not a loose slut.

Also while on the subject of rape how are your dogs Hand Banana and Spaghetti? 😁

Well that's the point. I don't think its a good show if it expects all of its audiences to have prior knowledge about the original source material. Besides the live versions aren't exactly a one to one translation of the books. I think I remember Spiderman was also involved in the whole DD vs Punisher thing.

Also TONIGHT!!!!!!😎

There's no need or expectation to know the comics at all.

Jessica is damaged. Damaged people often do reckless things (so do people who aren't damaged).

Jessica having casual sex or even a promiscuous lifestyle (we don't know if Luke is an exception or the rule) is not the least bit uncommon for rape or abuse survivors.

Yes it seems more logical to assume a victim like that would be either completely abstinent or at least very cautious, but that's not always the case.

you are this trope http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RealityIsUnrealistic

Indeed. This is as far away from Daredevil as it gets. DD was/is smart and delivers depth as well as excitement and action. Everything Jessica Jones did not and did wrong.

reply

Both Daredevil season were outstanding. I hope this series was the blip and that Netflix can prove the MCU isn't all Daredevil and crap. It's why I'm really pulling for Luke Cage. Jessica Jones was terrible. If Luke Cage is as well then it's not a coincidence.

reply

I have to agree. They hit a home run with both DD seasons but this was terrible. Why give it a second season when there's not even a comic book storyline to adapt or be inspired by this time around?

As bad as this turned out, I still say a second season might not be as bad. Just cut the PC nonsense.

reply

Hey good luck to you. Honestly I just don't like anything about the characters to invest any further. I am also giving this Luke Cage stuff a wide berth too by extension. If it does somehow manage to get universal acclaim I will give it a shot for now I will just wait for the next DD season. Season 2 was great but it sort of got muddied (expected more from Castle vs DD)

I'm with the OP... This show was boring and the characters were annoying and unlikable. We are entitled to our opinion. The show is well praised by critics and fans so we are the odd men out.

Honestly, THAT is the true majority feeling. Seriously, the fake praise just doesn't hold water.

reply

I never understood the concept of "fake praise".

Are you suggesting that people who didn't like it are pretending to like it? For what purpose?

Is it possible that some people actually liked it? It's a very different style of show and a departure from the usual super-hero tropes, so it's understandably going to have a different appeal. Some people who usually like just about anything "super-hero-y" won't like it and other people that rarely like anything from Marvel or DC might like it a lot.

The fact is, this show did appeal to a lot of people. Plenty felt exactly as you do to of course, but it did strike a cord with some people.

I really hope they can redeem the character after this awful opening season.

The cast is too great to waste like this.
