That film is actually based on the Bram Stoker novel The Jewel of Seven Stars. It's been adapted numerous times, most notably by Hammer as Blood From The Mummy's Tomb. It's one of the most well known examples of Egyptian Gothic that came out of the Victorian period's fascination with the region. There were actually a lot of Mummy stories back then, many of them featuring female mummies too. There are several academic essays on the subject which discuss the genre.
