Tom Cruise is NOT Van Helsing

I keep seeing this pop up in thread after thread. Folks, his character's name is Nick Morton. He is not immortal because of Dracula or whatever. He was cursed by the mummy. THAT'S IT.

So you don't know. That's helpful.

What is there to "not know"? That Tom was attached to a Van Helsing project a few years ago? A project he then left before signing on to this film, in which he plays a character not named Van Helsing who is dealing with a mummy's curse?

We'll have you seen this new film? Have you? No. You haven't. Therefore you don't know.

Tom Cruise was once attached to a Van Helsing movie that was to be produced by Alex Kurtzman and then all of the sudden he is starring in this? You have Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man, Javier Bardem as Frankenstein's Monster, Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll, The Rock possibly as the Wolfman and then Tom Cruise as.....Nick Morton? Really? You believe that? Do you not go out to the movies anymore? If you did you would know that the name we are given for a character ahead of time is usually there to mislead us.

Benedict Cumberbath ended up be Khan.

Naomie Harris ended up being Moneypenny.

Christopher Waltz ended up being Blofeld.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt ended up being Robin.

Marion Cotillard ended up being Talia Al Ghul.

Get with the program.

Boring named mysterious character always ends up being something bigger

I didn't have the patience to set this mouth breather straight.

Thank you for doing it for the entire board.

I commend you bro.

Van Helsing will get his own movie, they're still writing it. Mad Max (the character, if not the setting) was mentioned as inspiration.

So Cruise is probably not him.

Not gonna happen, sorry.

Movie happens in present day.
So it obviously won't be Abraham Van Helsing from the novel, unless he became immortal somehow (like in Dracula 2000 or in Van Helsing 2004). It probably will be his descendant or just some new character with last name Van Helsing and some basic traits.

Universal made a point that the new films would be more action-adventure based rather than horror.

Inspiration for this Van Helsing's behavior and his mannerisms is all in Mad Max according to Eric Heisserer, one of the screenwriters.

Jon Spaihts, another screenwriter, said:

It’s a new creation, so it doesn’t owe much of a debt to prior films, but it is still a very romantic departure from the character as incepted in Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula

So while this Van Helsing will have wits and use his knowledge, obviously, he will be action-packed and quite far away from the character in the novel.

You haven't seen it either. All you're going off of is that he was attached to a Van Helsing project at one point. You seem to forget that he left that project shortly before signing on to this one.

What's more likely is that the curse he's been afflicted with will result in him becoming a mummy himself in some way. Consider what we've seen. At some point in the film, we see undead medieval Crusaders rising from their graves. In an interview with Empire Kurtzman alluded to how Crusaders sacked Egypt and brought the plunder back to Europe. It's a safe bet that this Egyptian plunder resulted in those Crusaders being cursed.

Who else do we see rising from the dead? Tom Cruise's character. Whom we know has also been cursed by Ahmanet. Collider went on to ask Kurtzman if he would become a mummy himself, to which Kurtzman coyly replied "Great question." Followed by a long pause.

What sense would it make to turn Van Helsing into a Mummy? We also know from other interviews as well as the featurette that Dr. Jekyll, with Prodigium, is introducing Morton to "a new world of gods and monsters". Wouldn't Van Helsing already be familiar with that?

I know I haven't seen it but I only didn't give a definitive answer on a movie I haven't seen. Just a theory.

Going off the fact that he was attached to Van Helsing and is now doing this film with the same creative people involved is quite a wallop of evidence towards this popular theory. How can you just throw that all out?

reply

Because there's more evidence that he'll wind up becoming a mummy himself than there is that he's Van Helsing. Great, grand, fine, you haven't seen the movie, but have you even read my post fully? Have you read the interviews Kurtzman has given? Have you paid close attention to the footage we've seen?

"He was cursed by the mummy. THAT'S IT."

I hate it when that happens.

It sure is a lousy way to start the day.

I hope he is Van Helsing. I would like that.

He's not.

Then what are you worried about?

reply

It wouldnt be the first time a movie would give us a made up name for a character...

Not the point.
