This could be fun, but it'd be nice to see Tom in a serious movie again
I know American Made is coming out, and it will probably be his best in years. Hope he keeps doing stuff like that.

shareWas just sitting here thinking the same thing as I read your post.
Yeah, it's a shame that the kinds of movies that helped establish Cruise as a movie star with serious acting chops -- movies like THE COLOR OF MONEY, BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, THE FIRM and RAIN MAN -- simply aren't being made anymore. Big-studio movies have become much more globalized now, and thus need to appeal to a less discriminating and far more sensation-hungry audience.
Sucks, too, because the guy is a terrific actor.
I was also thinking about the state of film and to be honest, I think it might benefit Tom to do "smaller" films like he did with Magnolia. He's not going to find quality dramas with the big studios anymore, he'll need to accept a pay cut and go smaller for the art. It'll be a surprising and welcome change of pace, I feel.
shareI agree. Cruise could always do what other movie stars have done, which is to alternate film projects by doing "one for himself, one for them" for a while. That way he gets to retain his box office cred while still doing the terrific acting work he has already shown he is capable of.
shareI feel like he's super competitive and into box office when after 30 years, his legacy as a box office powerhouse is sealed. His most interesting works were the weird, out of left field choices (Interview with the Vampire, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut), so it'll be nice for him to return to it as he heads to his 60s.
