Would YOU want a TV series set in the UMCU?

*UMCU standing for "Universal Monster Cinematic Universe" for those not familiar.

I mean, Marvel has put out a total of five shows so far( Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones) with seven more on the way( The Defenders, Iron Fist, The Punisher, Inhumans, Cloak & Dagger, Damage Control, and The Runaways), most of which are/will be on instant streaming services like Netflix. Warner Bros. is rumored to be toying with the idea of doing shows set in the DCEU( But probably won't be experimenting with the idea for the time being given all the current DC TV shows on the air right now that need attention), not too mention FX has the much acclaimed Fargo(Where although its own thing it does tie into the original Coen film) and the upcoming Legion( Which, last I checked, will be set in the same universe as the new X-Men films; Fox is also developing another series set in the same universe too).

Would you like to see a TV series set in the UMCU? I know, it's a bit too early to say much, but I think the potential is unlimited when you really think about it - It could be a Victorian era soap opera, a sitcom, a procedural, even an anthology series is something I wouldn't rule out either.

I wouldn't mind. A mummy tv series wouldn't be bad, and I'd like a van helsing show too. But the actual Van Helsing, not that women version.

reply

Heck yeah. I think it'd be a great way to explore lesser monsters and films within the Universal Monster canon. The Invisible Ray, the Man Made Monster, the Mad Ghoul, etc...

I'd call it The Inner Sanctum.

Good idea.

I wouldn't mind if they did animated tie-ins, too like a DTV release or a TV series. Universal experimented with that in 2004 with two of their tentpole releases but they didn't attempt it again afterwards.

What about a drama set in Transylvania? I remember Universal planning something like that for HBO but 2004's Van Helsing was such a box office disappointment they ceased development.

I'm not opposed to the idea. If done well, it could work.

reply

Nope, not me.

I personally can't stand that there are so many shows out there.
With Marvel alone we have Daredevil (which I loved), Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Agents of Shield, Agent Carter, and soon Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher.

Then DC is considering doing the same thing.
Plus there are other shows.

I have to work, and I don't have nearly enough time to get through all of this stuff, and I know a lot of other people are in the same boat. If they stick to movies, it's easier to manage, doesn't get as confused, and you aren't muddling the universe with TV calibre actors, writing and special effects.

Ideally if they were to attempt such a thing it'd have to a series which has a limited number of episodes per season, 13 or less. That way they can avoid filler episodes and focus on the general plotline, and have more time to perfect the technical aspects to make it seem less like a TV show and more like a movie. Having a series be on an instant streaming service like Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon Prime would be much preferred because all episodes will be available the day the series starts and, depending on your schedule, you could get through it all in a day or two.

If Universal tried such a thing I could see them try having one series on basic network TV( Most likely on their station NBC) and put another on a streaming service(Most likely Netflix or Hulu, as they have some success with the two and a lot of their shows do stream on both platforms). The probability to that will depend on how successful the UMCU is and the demand for more content.
