Possible "twist" of the movie.

In case you did not know, this is supposed to start up a Universal Monster Universe, similar to the MCU. I don't know about you, but I have doubts that the female Mummy is going to be making more appearances. I think, in the studios mind, they want to have as many stars as they can when, "hopefully", all of these monsters finally get together. I mean, they already squeezed Dr. Jekyll in this movie, who is, of course, played by an Academy Award winner.

So I then had this crazy thought. What if the Mummy we're being shown here is not THE Mummy? I mean, of course this female Mummy is a Mummy, but she is being played by an actress who is an up-and-comer at best, and the way they are presenting her, I doubt she is really going to be a part of the hopeful get together that is being planned, at least not in a role where we are supposed to root for her.

So, what if the star of this movie, Tom Cruise, ends up being THE Mummy? As in, at the end of the movie, he ends up taking the mantle of being that creature? Thing is, he ended up in a plane crash, yet his body did not look like it went through such a crash. Since this is taking place in the modern day as far as I can see, he would have to have all signs that he was, in fact, dead before they put him in a body bag, which of course, he suddenly gets back up from. Something tells me that at the end, it is going to be revealed that he has become a Mummy, in fact THE Mummy.

So, what do you guys think of that idea? I know this sounds like I'm stretching, but if they want to have as many stars as possible for a potential cross-over, considering they have Russell Crowe and they also signed on Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem, I would not leave it completely out.

It doesn't sound like you're stretching. If you closely watch the trailer, the featurette, and read the numerous interviews with director Alex Kurtzman, it really sounds like that's what's happening.

1) Tom's character, Nick Morton, is afflicted with a curse from Ahmanet. This is how he survived the crash (or perhaps rose from the dead).

2) We see an army of undead Crusaders at various points. From an interview with Kurtzman we learn they were cursed after the sacking of Egypt during the Crusades, bringing their plunder back to Europe and presumably being cursed as a result.

3) Nick Morton is said to have a foil in Dr. Jekyll, who appears to head the monster hunting organization called Prodigium. If Morton and Jekyll are being presented as two sides of a coin, it may be a safe assumption that Morton was, himself, sacking Egypt just as the Crusaders did. Prodigium, by hunting and capturing monsters, is also stealing "treasures" of a sort, after all. If Morton is an illegal treasure hunter of some sort, this would also explain why he's sitting so far off in the plane: he's probably under investigation, if not arrest.

4) Dr. Jekyll is not only a foil for Nick Morton, but as everyone knows he's got a monster in him as well. The duality between humanity and monstrosity seems to be a key theme. Ahmanet has a sympathetic backstory that humanizes her. Dr. Jekyll is well known to exemplify this duality. Nick Morton, meanwhile, has no apparent monstrosity aside from this curse. Perhaps the monster side of him is brought out by becoming a Mummy.

5) In interviews Nick Morton is referred to as a sort of protagonist seen in Universal's past, a doomed protagonist who may not necessarily save the day. The best and most well known version of that is Larry Talbot, aka The Wolf Man. Larry Talbot was a man struggling to control a curse that changed him into a monster. I suspect that Nick Morton is, in his own way, analogous to Larry Talbot, becoming a Mummy instead of a werewolf.

Warning! The Monster is loose!

question for prometheus...

you seem well read and know your gothic horror. so, considering op's prediction and your answer: have you ever come across a story that fits op's description?

i love the universal monster movies, hammer and amicus. i had no idea bram stoker wrote a mummy story. i've only read 'dracula'.

enjoying your posts.
