Strike two...

No reason to sugarcoat it: this looks like a godawful movie, a complete disaster, an explosion-filled, CGI-laden, brainless action sh!tfest with a PG rating and no target audience. Universal wants to ape the Marvel shared universe with the horror characters but doesn't want to make actual horror movies. DRACULA UNTOLD was originally intended as the first film in that universe but it proved such a disaster it has been scrapped. Now, Universal is back for round two and the trailer gives every indication that the studio suits didn't learn a damn thing from that experience and have repeated all the same mistakes.

I still think the studio very likely intentionally misled us with the trailer because early script reviews said it was more horror than action.

I mean, the bulk of the trailer focuses on the same sequence (the plane crash) and what comes right before or right after, which all likely happens in the first 30-45 minutes of a 2 to 2 and a half hour movie. I personally think there's a reason for that.

I'd love to learn that was the case. I'm very pessimistic about the prospects though.

Everything after that is the same too though. This movie is opening in June--tentpole season, the time when all of the studios throw their huger-than-huge, brainless CGI-filled action-fests at the public.

They learned nothing from the bitterly disappointing "Van Helsing." This looks like all CGI, explosions, and running, and cartoonish sequences with no heart or character development. I was really hoping for a reboot of the Universal monster classics from the 30s and 40s. I'm keeping an open mind, but right now this looks awful.

Van Helsing was 13 years ago. Find a better example.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor? Dracula Untold? Universal has let a lot of dust collect on the properties that put them on the map.

I liked the Wolfman (2010) for the most part, aside from the dream sequences and the "let's have two werewolves and make `em fight" ending. This isn't following that movie's tone or style though; it looks more like a tentpole superhero flick than a horror film.

If this forthcoming film reminds them of a dated movie with poor fx, why would they need a 'better' example? That is their example. That is why they aren't looking forward to this.

I bet you £5 this movie has a portal in the sky threatening to destroy New York City. Y'know, like every other *beep* big-budget grey-tinted action-shlock that we've had since 'Avengers' came out
