Zac Efron is miscast in this film

Don't get me wrong I think he's great, but he was just wrong for this role. He is very young looking and too good looking, he just wasn't believable as a trauma doctor in an ER.
Anyone else agree?

reply

Not sure he was in the film enough or had a big enough impact to make me think he's a miscast. Having said that you're probably right technically about his age but still he gave an intense performance for a very small role.

I agree not to mention, I assume he's still trying to break out of his Disney/Musical persona showing he can play a serious role beyond the mouse ears.

As i posted in a separate thread, NO American male in 1963 was walking around in a "5-day scruff" semi-goatee beard like Efron in this movie, especially not in Texas.

Any doctor who showed up at the hospital looking like that in 1963 would be given 10 minutes to get shaved or sent home.

Also, Tom Welling as Roy Kellerman? Tom freakin' Welling? I guess they needed a way to draw teenage girls somehow.

Okay, well... filibuster.

reply

I thought Welling was reasonably OK, although he didn't have much of a part.

I thought he did pretty well. He did look young, but he was a resident doctor, which means fresh out of medical school, right?
The moment that got me was when his character was still pumping JFK's chest. I thought he pulled that desperation off really well.

Efron turned 26 in October 2013, so he was probably 25 when the film was made. According to the mini-bio at the end, Carrico was 28 in 1963. In other words, Efron is not too young for the role. Some people just look young for their age. I also think he did a fine job in the role ... but I agree about the scruffy beard. Totally out of place in 1963.

I had no idea what the beards where like in 1963 so that didn't bother me, i thought Zac did a great job! And i enjoyed Tom welling too:)

As someone else replied on this thread (I presume it's the person who deleted his/her own post), when we see him for the first time, Carrico is doing a 48 hour shift as a surgical resident, meaning he had up to a couple of days' beard growth.

Burial vaults are optional in Texas, depending on the cemetery. Every funeral I've attended, some flowers are laid across the casket and lowered into the grave with it.

Who wrote this ?

Director Peter Landesman adapted his script from a book by Vincent Bugliosi (an attorney best known for prosecuting Charles Manson and his followers for the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders).

Not a bad actor, but yes - I didn't buy him in this.

I thought Paul Giamatti was miscast too. Normally a solid actor, but he wasn't Zapruder at all - not in terms of looks, voice or anything.

reply

I also think he is miscast. He does not fit in; just my opinion.
