Is it Bosun or Boatswain?

My closed caption used both randomly.

reply

My understanding is that either is correct.

reply

I think either is acceptable, but both are pronounced bosun, right?

reply

Lol. I Googled it last week for the same reason. CC uses it interchangeably. They are the same thing. Pronounced bosun.

reply

Both are correct, but Boatswain is proper.

I feel sorry for anyone that has to depend on closed caption to follow what people are saying on a show. More often than not, it's horribly inaccurate and lacks information. Sometimes it's utter gibberish.

reply

LOL you "feel sorry" for people who use closed captioning?? I don't need to use it- fortunately- but I like to in case I miss one word. It's tough to make out background talk, etc. But I do believe there are much more legit reasons to feel sorry for people!

Sorry, you have misunderstood what I was saying. I'm referring to someone that depends on Close Captioning to follow what people are saying on a show due to having some type of hearing impairment. Not because they missed one word, but because they depend on Close Captioning for the entire show.

In addition to Close Captioning behaving exactly like I described, it can be frustratingly out of sync with the actors or the descriptions of background sounds during the show. Like you, fortunately, I am not dependent on Close Captioning. However, I do try to be empathetic to those folks who do depend on it.

Issues arise mostly with the process of automatically transcribing and generating captioning for shows. That process needs to be improved and they need to hire better proofreaders that will make corrections before the show reaches air. These improvements would greatly benefit everyone -- from the person that missed one word, to others that depend on the service.

Yeah why would anybody feel bad for deaf people? I mean, it's not like it makes life difficult or anything 

reply

Unfortunately, because people don't know how to enunciate their words properly on these "reality" shows, sometimes the only way to figure out what they're saying is to have the CC on.

Ship worker here-Bosun is more common but both can be used, no difference. Mostly depends on nationality of crew members versus any sort of ranking.

reply

Bosun, boatswain or bos’n. All are correct, although I prefer the last two.

reply

Boatswaina is a country in Africa.
