She can pretend to be a nice person with the guests and the Captain so as to somehow convince herself she's not a completely despicable person.
That way, it never occurs to her that she's a complete witch to everyone else she comes into contact with.
Kiss up, kick down. She knows the drill. When her team screws up, she never takes an ounce of heat. She plans for this by setting up traps in advance, like the walkie talkie. Those things are bulky and get in the way when the stews are working in tight spaces, so they set them down and inevitably forget them in the rush and hurry. It's annoying but it's not like the boat is the Queen Mary; go march upstairs and tell them face to face.
Kelley on the other hand gets the heat for every mishap by his crew. He does screw up more, true.

I'm no fan of Kate's, but the STEWS make their own lives miserable by not even doing the minimum! If their boss has to change toilet paper rolls and put towels up because they're lazy, what is she supposed to do; let it go on and allow them to collect those tips? I think not! That's one reason I could never be a boss; too many people hate their jobs! It bugs me when people kvetch about their positions when no one's putting a gun to their heads to do it! I guess it's easy for me since I always enjoyed what I did for a living! î

I've always liked Kate, but this season, especially in the last few episodes, she has been extremely nasty in situations that didn't call for that type of behavior (because I can't find a better word) IMO. If someone is not doing their job, sure, call them on it. But sometimes it's not what you say but the way you say it. Couple that with the fact that Sierra and especially Emily have worked hard and done their jobs well all season up until now. Just seems like an overreaction to me.
But yes, she makes sure she sucks up to Captain Lee. I guess I don't blame her. He is her boss. But it's in sharp contrast to the way she has been acting to just about everyone else lately.
But Kate bitches about her job all the time. She alway says she is in it for the tips. She bitches about people who drink mojitos, she complained about the woman who asked her to press her skirt (because, per Kate, this is the womanâs way of feeling like she is getting the luxury treatment so sheâs milking it), she also scared Kat into thinking they werenât going to get a cash tip for the first charter because the people were âtoo niceâ and therefore (to Kate) the type who give a âwords tipâ instead of money (Kate: âwords donât get me purses and sunglasses.â)
