Subtitles? Subtitles!!!!

I hear such great things about this version of Godzilla, but I just don't think it'll feel right without the voices dubbed in. It just won't feel right without someone speaking english badly matched to lip movements.

"Oh, Godzilla! Aah!"

That's how I feel about low tier Kung Fu movies.

It's a personal preference, but I have no problem with reading subtitles, if the film makes sense and is expertly produced, as this one is.
Doing a bad voice over would have ruined the drama of the film. This was only the second time in a Godzilla film that I felt empathy (and sympathy) for the human characters.
The writers did a wonderful job crafting a storyline that the director used to full advantage to make me (and a lot of other fans!) care for the people, who, usually in this type of film are basically nothing more than monster fodder!

So, essentially, this is a Godzilla movie where the characters are the story and the monster takes a backseat, right??

reply

Not quite. The human story is the main focus, but Godzilla makes several appearances in the film, each time getting more terrifying to behold.
It is a vastly superior film in comparison to some of the earlier productions in the series.
As in the very first Gojira, he is all death and destruction and not a gigantic superhero.

There are online language tutorials available where one can learn to speak Japanese. Thats what I did. I find Godzilla films so much more enjoyable now because I know Japanese. No need to hear voice awful dubbing or reading small lines on the screen
