Perfect double feature with "Oppenheimer"
"Oppenheimer" is a child dressed up as an adult with its on-the-sleeve story of the birth and first use of horrible atomic weapons and shows the hinted formation of countrywide trauma. And on the personal level depicts sexual jealousy quite literally in a childlike way.
"Godzilla Minus One" is the adult telling a fairytale in the voice of a child. It's taking national trauma and finding the humanity and preserving it, climbing out of that valley of national depression. And on the personal level shows someone emerging out of their dysfunction caused by personal trauma to become a functional human capable of relationships. A more complex thing presented again in a cliched fairy tale way... but, remarkably, it works!
I think, after "Iron Giant", this might be one of the best male-centric emotional movies that hits on tones of fatherhood and male roles. Interesting that both have to be skinned as childlike fairy tale movies! (yes fairy tales can contain horror).
