OT: Jamie Dornan in The Fall

I'd seen parts of it but finally binge watched the first two seasons. Jamie was absolutely mesmerizing in it, yet was weak in Fifty Shades. Shows how important decent material, good writing, and skilled direction is to an actor. After seeing him in The Fall, I felt once again that Jamie Dornan was miscast in Fifty Shades. The producers needed a more expressive and more experienced actor to wade through that mess.

I believe we will see a different approach in the next two movies, the main thing being, Jaime and Dakota know what to expect and seem way more comfortable with each other, and the action moves more out into the world...new director..new script writer...and definitely the better books...for one thing..Christian is more open and broken...and achingly in love..a true romance...

and yes, after I found out Jamie was cast, I looked up his other work and found The Fall on Netflix...Season 3 is in the can and is on for late fall..

Hi isundling,

Anyone who claims Jamie isn't talented has to see The Fall. He blew me away. I'm sure he'll be much better in the newer films, I just wish they'd had a different director and screenwriting team on the first film.

reply

He is amazing in "The Fall". Gave me chills the first time I watched it!

Hi april_1,

Jamie blew me away in The Fall, scary sexy. If he'd been allowed to show some of that side in Fifty Shades instead of playing Christian as a cold stiff, the film would have received more repeat business.

reply

I couldn't agree more. Seeing him in "The Fall" shows that he can nail intense but unfortunately Fifty Shades didn't allow for it.

Hi april_1,

If they had utilize his inherent sexuality, skipped those bogus, porn-lite "love" scenes with Beyoncé singing in the background, had the actors actually engage with each other, they would have had a more interesting film. Goodness, a scene similar to the one where Paul Spector masturbates for his teen minion would have women standing around the block.

Ah, what could have been :/ All I know is watching the film, for me, it dragged and I kept checking to see how much longer it had to go. I honestly gave the movie a chance, I wanted to like it, it just didn't do for me what, apparently, it did for the many fans.

Hi ampril_1,

I wanted to like Fifty Shades too. I knew the source material was weak but hoped that minus the inner goddess bs and with interesting on-screen sex, it could have been at least decent. After seeing Jamie's work, I know he would have given his all with a decent script and a real director. Dakota would never have been my first choice but with a competent director she might have had a chance. I'll be interested to see what they do with the Crossfire series when it comes on premium cable. The rights to the books were purchased by the same production entity that does Outlander so hopefully, it will have a chance to be good. I want to see two actors connecting and giving their all.

reply

I didn't care for the series at all, although I recognized the strength of the core story. The direction for Fifty was definitely not at it's best.

Premium cable is definitely not handicapped the same way that a motion picture is so I'm with you on that hope.

Hi april_1,

Are you referring to the Crossfire series? To be honest, I couldn't get beyond book three; however, the plot is stronger, the supporting characters are better written, and the sex scenes were more realistic than Fifty Shades. I haven't met young women who refer to their vagina as "down there" and never quite understood in Fifty Shades how a sheltered virgin could be so accomplished with fellatio.

Sylvia Day wants full-throttle sex scenes with the television adaptation and let's hope she gets it.

reply

I was referring to 50 shades however when it comes to the Crossfire Series, I made it through all three books but I wasn't in a big hurry to read the 4th even though I did. I'll probably read the next one after that too but again I'm not in a hurry

Hi april_1,

The novel, Fifty Shades of Grey was really lousy, not something that could be made into a great film. However, with competent directing, it could have been a juicy sex romp. Instead we got something tepid, soft-porn sex acts between two actors who never connected on-screen. The fact that it made money was because of the popularity of the source material, not the quality of the movie.

reply

I have to agree. It could have so much better than it was. Sure, the novel itself was weak but as you have said better direction of the movie would have made all the difference. Another point I have to agree with is that huge box office returns doesn't mean that a movie is quality (Just look at the Transformer series, for example).

Okay, so I HATE violence and shows like The Fall. But surprisingly, I didn't hate The Fall. I really love it actually. Jamie is an amazing Paul Spector and I can't see anyone else playing him. OMG. That line when Christian finds Ana in Clayton's.
ANA: So you're the complete serial killer
CHRISTIAN: Not today
So clever
