One of the best novels of the 20th century (so far)

I don't know why this book occasionally gets negative reviews. To me it's arguably the best book of the 20th century so far, with only the Twilight books, Eat Pray Love, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief coming close. I would also add that James is arguably one of the best authors of all time, right up there with Hemingway, Shakespeare, Faulkner, and Melville. I haven't read the sequels, only Grey, but I'll be sure to read them before the movies come out. James's command of the English language is beautiful, she infuses her characters with amazing depth and emotion, and her prose style is second to none. Being an English major who has taken several classes in creative writing, I also appreciate the non-repetitiveness, realistic dialogue, lack of grammatical errors, and memorable passages that stay with you long after it's over.

Yet many people on Amazon gave it bad reviews. Why? I'm sure the answer is fourfold: 1.) They're jealous of James's success; 2.) They don't consider that erotic novels can be good literature, so they hold that against it; and 3.) They didn't even read it and are just basing their opinions on what others have said.

I loved the movie as well, but (as it often happens) the movie isn't as good as the book. That being said, I don't fault the movie too much; it's impossible to cram hundreds of pages of a book into a single two-hour movie and not leave certain things out.

It should win a Pulitzer!!!

I agree but keep in mind that many great novels weren't appreciated in their time and didn't win the Pulitzer, including The Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby. From the backlash that Grey got, it didn't win in 2011.

Still, IMO it's the best novel of this young 20th century.

But isn't this(2016) the 21st century?...the books came out around 2011 so that would make them written in the 21st...

reply

What do you mean? 2016 would mean 20th century (the "20" in front of the "16"). It would be the 21st century if the year was 2116.

At least a century I would say...lol

reply

But are you sure that you're right? Did they just start referring to centuries as referring to the previous 100 years, or is this something new? Is this just an "English" thing, or do all countries and languages do this?

The difference is because from year 1-100 is the first century. Then years 101-200 is in the 2nd century. 201-300 is the 3rd century. So the century will always be one digit higher than the first two digits of the year. Hence the 1700s were the 18th century; the 1800s were the 19th century. And so on and so forth. We are currently in the 21st century. This applies to all cultures and countries that follow the gregorian calendar (christian calendar).
