Not as bad as all that

It's not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination. The writing left a lot to be desired and the acting was mediocre (except the guy playing Christian, he was downright bad).

Next are spoilers:

Nevertheless, I truly liked the ending, the way she responded after the lashing seemed entirely genuine and justified to me. I liked that she put her foot down and wouldn't allow him to bully or domineer her into staying, despite loving him. Obviously I haven't read the books, so I have no idea how she ends up back with him, but I kinda wish they left this one as a stand alone, instead of coming up with a contrived reason to make a sequel, be it a novel or a movie.

I wish you could have seen the alternate book ending...that was one of the things that bothered me about the movie...Christian was devastated..and of course so was Ana..and you need the next two movies because that is the whole point of the first one..setting up their love story.

Check out the alternate ending on YouTube.

Hi Vulpes_zerda,

Although many people disagree, Fifty Shades is an erotic romance, not erotica, not a story about BDSM. It's a sexual fantasy with a happily ever after ending. The sexual sadism is Grey's secret, the darkness he has to overcome.

The novels are badly written, but there is an interesting story at the core. The movie suffered from poor direction, weak source material and a lousy script. The actors couldn't overcome the crappy writing. Jamie Dornan has been castigated for his portrayal of Christian Grey, but he's been wonderful in other projects. He simply couldn't overcome the direction and the lousy script.

I didn't care for the abrupt ending of the first film and wish they'd followed the books. The novels never would have been as successful if they'd ended on such a downer.

I hadn't even heard of the books until I read about the movie....I read some post that said the movie should have just ended there..and if the book had, I would have been unhappy...it needs the next two books/movies to get to the heart of the romance...will be interesting to see what a new screen writer and director will do...but the different story is half the battle.

I will say in the Sylvia Day Crossfire series...the last book was a total waste..that story line did not need 5 books..but I really enjoyed the four..

Hi isundling, I'd read first two novels before they made the first film. I found the books badly written, Ana especially weak, but the Beauty and the Beast aspect of the novels intrigued me, and the power shift. Just as in Beauty and the Beast, the female protagonist has the power to bring out the beasty anti-hero's humanity. I do wish the original film had had a better director/writing team. It would never be a great movie, but it sure could have been alot better.

Regarding Crossfire, I really enjoyed the first book, wasn't nuts about the next one and skipped the last three because of the repetition. I agree that the story didn't need five books but Day is certainly a better writer than E.L. James.
