Will this be a remake of the 1946 classic?

I'd watched the Jean Cocteau version of Beauty and the Beast early last year and thought it was pretty interesting. They were very resourceful with the SFX which is my favorite thing to watch out for when it comes to old films under the fantasy genre. I wouldn't mind a remake. If they want to revamp it into a darker version of the fairy tale (since that seems to be the trend of late), I think it would be easy to do with the Cocteau version.

I seriously doubt that it would be a remake. He seems to have a complete different perspective?

Here is what he said to Variety a year ago :

"Gans' screenplay is based on one of the earliest published variants of the traditional fairy tale, included in Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve's 1740's collection, "La Jeune Ameriquaine et les Contes Marins." Unusually, it features a genuinely savage beast.

Gans told Variety that it is a multi-layered tale, aimed at both children and adults. "It talks, among other things, about the power of dreams and love versus materialism and corruption, which makes it more than ever relevant today."

"Beauty's" screenplay was written "humbly, in the shadow of that giant" Hayao Miyazaki, Japan's celebrated animator, Gans added.

"Beauty" is "above all a family film which tells the universal tale of love between two people who fall for one another in spite of their differences," said Grandpierre, who also produced 2001's "Brotherhood of the Wolf.""

Well what made Cocteau so special was mostly his style and directing skill, I think it would be hard to imitate that.

The first half is like a remake, but the second half is completely different.
