Gorgeous looking film, worst Belle/Beast relationship

The costumes and set pieces (most of them) were the best things about this movie. But they spent way too much time on Belle's family at the expense of her relationship with the Beast. They could have cut the entire subplot of the eldest brother's gambling debts and Perducas and co. Sometimes a movie doesn't need an obvious villain to make it interesting.

I enjoyed watching this movie because it's so beautiful, but at no point did I feel any sympathy for the Beast, or Belle for that matter. She doesn't appear to have a personality once she gets to the castle and he has no redeeming qualities either as Beast or man??? He was a bad husband to the Princess and there was no connection between him and Belle other than needing a woman to break the curse and her slight resemblance to his dead wife. She goes from being almost assaulted by him on the ice, being disgusted by him, seeing him disregard his promise to his wife and accidentally kill her and that...somehow results in love? They needed to spend less time on her family drama
and more on developing her relationship with Beast. Whatever trepidations I have for the Disney live action, I know they will at least get the romance right.
