I like this movie more every time I watch it. The movie has so much to say but it's all myths and metaphors. I get something new out of it every time I watch it.
shareI thoroughly enjoyed it in the cinema and preferred it to Prometheus. It’s got Ridley’s nasty nihilism all over it and the creatures are fantastically skin-crawling.
Much like Scream 4, people will only realise its excellence after the director has died, and as a result we won’t get a proper sequel. Tragic really.
I prefer it to Prometheus, too. Yes, the astronauts are dumb and / or annoying, but Fassbender was amazing. If the film had featured more Fassbender and less stupid action / CGI / colonizers, I think the film would have been better received. As it is, it’s probably the most thought-provoking of the Alien franchise since Ailen3 (ignore the theater cut, find the assembly cut, it’s much better).
It also manages to be even darker than Alien 3. That movie ended with everyone dying but in the process they killed the alien and saved the day. In Covenant everyone dies… for nothing, and in fact their involvement has now given David what he needs to colonise whole planets with hundreds of thousands of aliens.
Just a damn shame we’ll never see all that and how it connects to Alien 🤦🏻♂️
I thought it was a decent film. Very bleak, like an Alien movie should be. It delivers on the horror and monsters too. David is a terrifying villain. Some flaws held it back from being one of the great entries in the series, though.
