Season five mid-season finale ( ep. 10 ) thoughts

I honestly don't understand your criticism of Lagertha. I can understand why some might not like her, I don't like what they've done with her character this year. But seeing how women in Viking culture had roles much more equal to men and participated in battle, why shouldn't she be able to sleep with whoever she wants? She is queen and it's not like she's committed to anyone. Would you hate an unmarried king for sleeping with whoever he wants?

Personally I'm more upset about being deprived of seeing the sex scenes between Lagertha and Heahmund. If she's going to sleep with him in my opinion they should at least have the decency to show it.

Yeah, she has been trying to act like Ragnar lately when she leans in to talk to someone. Counting Bjorn, there is Lagertha, Floki and Rollo as the only season 1 main characters left. It's looking like at least 2 of those will be dead by the end of this season.

Atreides, she has outstayed your welcome. She has not outstayed mine.

Let's say I agreed with your condemnations of her as an actress, which I don't; but let's say that I did. The role of Lagertha requires something more than facial expression and vocal tonality. The role of the Queen Shield Maiden requires, as well SHEER PHYSICALITY AND PROWESS, and Winnick delivers that IN SPADES! Meryl Streep and Jody Foster are in every way better thespians than Winnick, but they could not, right now, today, convince me the way that she does. The defiant confidence of her posture, the predation in her walk, the definition in her movements, the blood passion in her fighting: these are all outstanding, and a non-negotiable part of the role of playing Lagertha. Bruce Lee was not Lawrence Olivier, but Olivier could not have played the roles for which Bruce Lee was suited.

But the fact is, the condemnations that you made are not things that I see. For me, she has not declined over the years. To me, her acting is more subtle than you acknowledge and is at least equal to the task that Hirst's hack, potboiler scripts require. You don't like her. I get it. Follow your taste; but I think your vision of what it takes to play the part of Lagertha is too limited.

We do at least agree that she is incendiaryly hot. I congratulate you on your good taste.

I hope the Iceland plot will become a big part of the series. It's perhaps been a bit uneventful but I think the director is going somewhere. Here's is my theory.

Flóki is sacrificed to the gods and some of the initial settlers sail back to Norway. People hear of Flóki's death and this "land of the gods". One of the people that hears of this land is Erik the Red, who gets exiled from Norway. He sails to Iceland where he again becomes exiled forcing him to sail further west to Greenland where he establishes a settlement. Someone that was trying to sail to Greenland got blown of course and accidentally stumbled upon a great land (Canada) before arriving to Greenland. Erik the Red's son, Leif Erikson decides to sail to this land (perhaps in desperation because life in Greenland was so tough, there were essentially no trees or resources) and creates a short term settlement in Newfoundland (which he calls Vínland). Leif then sails back to Greenland (armed with resources) and inspires another viking Thorfinn Karlsefni to form a permanent settlement in Vinland. Thorfinn then has battles with Native Americans, as documented in Greenland Saga.

I think it would be epic. But we shall wait and see, perhaps the Iceland story just fades out and the series will end with the death of Ivar. But I hope they go to America.
