Terrible ratings but still made money
Isn't that odd?
shareNope. It's a global market these days, and the IMDb (and other ratings sites) are only a small sliver of the total audience. Plus, P. T. Barnum was right.

Good? (Cause this increases the chances of The Infinite Sea, right?)
share5.2/10 isn't terrible. That's mediocre.
Considering that this film ended up being mediocre but better than half of the young adult films we've been getting lately, I am not at all shocked they made a profit on it and will be considering finishing the trilogy. If those damn divergent movies can keep going, this surely will.
I enjoyed the movie even I know it is not Shakespeare. Guilty pleasure.
shareHow did it make money? I see that the revenue is about equal to the production costs. In order for any movie to post a positive cash flow, the revenue must be at least 3 times the production costs. Advertising accounts for the majority of the budget, and is about twice the production budget.
shareit grossed 109M
34M in the USa
75M rest of the world
it probably broke even
It bombed here. That's what matters to the bigwigs. I don't think its world wide gross was enough to interest the studio in wanting to greenlight a sequel.

Isn't that odd?
Not really. A lot of people thought the trailer was interesting and were expecting to see alien -vs- human battles. A lot of people fell for the marketing and got duped. I, however, waiting for it to come to Netflix and got it on there.
