What Happened to the US Military?

Mild spoilers ahead, maybe...

What happened to the actual US military in this film? How did the Others take over the Air Force base? And if they had the power to take out the US military why did they need to train children, some as young as about 6, to go into combat against a bunch of loose rebels holed up in war torn towns? Rebels that had no power, likely little running water, poor rations, almost no way to communicate other than word of mouth, and limited weapons and ammunition?

I imagine it is easier to take out a large known nest rather than the spiders hiding inside your walls.

The aliens had been taking over humans for years. The first wave already happened and that's what that was. They use children because they're easier to minipulate. They will kill without asking questions. They start asking questions. They get killed. The 5th wave is the kids killing off the rest of the human kind.
