The Scotsman - speculation

I'm sure someone else has already asked this, but, given that all we've had of the Scotsman is a voice on the phone with a Scottish accent - how do we know that the Scotsman is indeed Scottish?

Is it possible - even probable? - that the voice we keep hearing belongs to another character? If so - who do you think it is?

It might be Hastings, an Irishman. Maybe that is too obvious an answer.

I think you're over-analysing it. Why assume a conspiracy when there is such slender evidence, at best, for it?

The Scot is obviously the drug kingpin. From the last scenes he is obviously on good terms with the senior Old Bill, but as he probably has no record that's not surprising.

There is never any indication whatsoever that Gates has any doubts about his superiors, apart from a natural antipathy towards Hastings, who is a small-minded penpusher out to destroy Gates's career.

I repeat: I think you're reading way too much into this. If series 2 proves me wrong I'll dig out my hat so I can eat it, but I don't think that will be necessary.

Well - that's my speculation up in smoke!
