Why would Laverty who was obviously connected to some very unsavoury types, risk her own life/reputation by killing her accountant using her own car?

Surely she could have had a word with Tommy to inform him of the imminent threat to their business? He would have had the accountant removed without any danger to Laverty.

Or we could accept some details of Jackie's account as being correct. The accountant threatened to call the police and she panicked. The police would have his allegations on file even if he was subsequently eliminated by Tommy.
