American watching this has a Q or two?

Detective Chief Inspector
Detective Inspector
Detective Sergeant

That's the order of rank. Chief Inspector, Inspector and Sergeant are police officer ranks in the UK, with a CI being a member of the higher ranked section of the police, but still with a further 7 ranks above it.

The Detective prefix does not change the powers and responsibilities of the officer, but designates that the officer has a proven investigative ability and has received suitable training and passed related examinations, to conduct all manner of criminal investigations. Typically a Detective ranked officer will work in plain clothes rather than uniform.

Full ranking structure for UK County Police Services:
Constable, Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector, Superintendent, Chief Superintendent, Assistant Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constable, Chief Constable.

For the Metropolitan Police and the City of London Police it's the same up to Chief Superintendent then Commander, Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner.

I hope this helps.

James
