I am taking my son to see this tmrw. 2 questions.....

I am a huge fan of Pixar movies, I like/love them all with the exception of maybe Cars 2 and Brave (and maybe Monsters University) and I doubt this will come close to that realm of things - or am I prejudging it and simply wrong?

My other question is this - how pertinent is it that I see Despicable Me 1 and 2 before seeing this tomorrow? Would it benefit me in enjoying Minions more if I saw these first? Or is it really not that important?

Thanks in advance - I appreciate and respect any and all opinions. So, what are your opinions of Minions?

This is a prequel. It happens before Despicable 1 and 2. You can watch it without watching the others.

However, if you watch Despicable 1 and 2, Minion's ending scene will be more important in that regard. Because it's really a link to the next movies.

Overall, it was a fine movie. Very short, objective. I think you and your son will like it.

reply

Saw it last nite. Meh... Literally the first one is one of my hubby's favorite movies, so needless to say we're big fans. No heart in this one, just silly gag after silly gag. This rates #3 of 3 in the trilogy for us. If your son is under 7 he'll love it. Got a few chuckles from us and the music is awesome IMO. But probably won't get the DVD on this one as the others....

I never understood the phrase "needless to say". If it is indeed "needless to say", then WHY SAY IT?

Eight divided by one-half equals four squared!

reply

It's an idiom used for emphasis.

reply

Wrong. It's a waste of word space and brain receptors. That is the only thing it is.

Just skip this movie, go see Inside Out (again), and buy your kid a minion doll.

reply

Agreed. Inside Out (which is the Pixar movie -- this one is Universal) is far better. However, a really young child might prefer this movie as it has a far less complex plot and, therefore, might be easier for a little kid to understand.

This was really not 90 minutes of movie. It would have made a good short.

And while my daughters were enchanted by the ending as related to Despicable Me, no it's not necessary to see it to understand this movie. There wasn't that much to this movie overall.

reply

The sole reason for this movie (sadly) was to generate as much money as possible in merchandise sales, etc. unfortunately, this is a thoughtless, boring, piece of garbage. Don't get me wrong, Despicable Me 1 and 2 were clever, funny, smart and entertaining. This movie was obviously rushed so Universal can keep collecting the big bucks riding the momentum of the first two quality movies. If you want to go see a clever, thoughtful, entertaining movie this summer, go see Inside Out.

This movie programs your kids brains to believe being bad is good.

How can I trust "professional" critics when both TDKR and Avengers are critically acclaimed? 

I totally agree.

I am the OP. I tried to take him last Tuesday but it was sold out, so I am taking him tomorrow. I am not expecting to be blown away and wish I hadn't already saw "Inside out" with him, as that was awesome. I am hoping it is not sold out tomorrow, as he keeps saying "Banana!!" and really wants to go. If it wasn't for my 4-year-old, I wouldn't see it at all, most likely. I would see "Inside Out" again.

It was sold out? I went to see it this afternoon, and there were less than 10 people in the theater. I guess it depends on the locale.

This movie is/was still filling CT theaters this past weekend. I was surprised it was still showing hourly at one joint, and the Sat 4 pm showing was 80% full.

The kids loved it, wife and I gave it a C-, and we're big animation fans. Probably the worst animation theater experience for we two.

I thought the script needed another 6-9 months of combing. Sandra Bullock was meh.
Perhaps the adorable minions are not deep enough to lead a movie.

That's awesome, bannana lol. I hope you enjoy it. Please reply and let me know what you thought ok?

Just out of curiosity, how did your son like Inside Out?

If you're happy and you know it, go sit in the corner and think about your life.

reply

Usually he is antsy and talkative during movies as he is only 4 yrs old, but he was totally quiet, focused and assuredly entertained by "Inside Out". So was my sister and my father whom came with us. Definitely a good flick! But, what else would you expect from Pixar!

I was just asking since there have been some saying some younger kids wouldn't like IO.

I didn't find it to be very good. I expectec a stupid but funny kids' movie. I feel I only got the former.

Alas, I went again to a sold out auditorium. I generally go to the local multiplex when they have their $5 Tuesday special running. I know, what else should I expect...I know, I know. We're gonna shoot for next Tuesday, but wisely buy our tickets in advance this time. I saw part of Despicable Me, it seemed pretty decent. I'll probably end up watching the first two before next Tuesday, in which now kinda invalidates my original post. HAHA! Thanks to all those that so kindly responded!

My recommendation is wait & see minions first. Watching the better movies will just color your perception of it.

Went to see it yesterday with my four-year-old son, and he really enjoyed it. He also liked Despicable Me, but he absolutely LOVES Despicable Me 2. He's really into those Minions, and really wanted to see this film as soon as he saw the ads. 
Hope your kid enjoys Minions, too!
