1968? why?
why set it in 1968? kids won't get any of the references or jokes.
shareAs far as 1968 I wondered the same thing. The '68 theme was done for a small portion of the film otherwise it
really didn't matter. As far as kids 'getting it' ... They are not expected to and never were ... I remember the old Tweety / Sylvester cartoons. Sly tried his best to catch Tweety but was protected by a Bulldog. The Bulldog punches Sly with an uppercut to the chin sending him straight up past Tweety in his birdcage. Tweety's Remark: " They must have repealed the law of gravity. "
Every third person who complains will be shot. Two people have complained already!
Just seems strange that it would go over their heads, maybe they aimed it at the parents?
shareYes, this was exactly why. All the music/TV references made it pretty obvious...
'Get yourself a real dog. Any dog under 50 lbs is a cat and cats are pointless' - Ron Swanson
Aimed at the GRANDPARENTS. We saw it today with our 9 year old grandson. He enjoyed it and we loved the music.
There's a goof in it, though. The moon landing is pictured, and that wasn't until 1969.
I thought the same about the moon landing. But since they had fun with the conspiracy theories and showed the whole incident to be staged, it could have still been plausible. We cannot know whether it wasn't filmed a year before making it public to the world.
shareI think so - a lot of these types of films have jokes/references in them that only adults will get.
she's worth a look... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAIJ3Rh5Qxs
That's irrelevant. It's all a matter of atmosphere and mood. And the 60s seems to have been a cool decade. Wish I could have experienced it (but then again, if I did, I would probably have been in my 60s now myself).
shareIm sure the 60s was nowhere near as cool as it is portrayed in movies, people often glorify nostalgia.
sharegreat music when it was new
The 60's is the decade that took me from 5 years old to 15 years old, my formative years, when I learned about music and life. Yes, it was very cool!!
shareAnd they skipped all the Motown music I heard as a kid.
Very disappointing.
How to create an atheist: read the bible twice cover to cover.
Dear Kreutznaer, the 60's was a cool decade! I got to experience it 1st hand, from the tender age of 5, to being a teenager of 15. An awesome time in which to set a prequel about the Minions. Sooooo....what's wrong with being in one's 60's? Think of all the knowledge and experience you will have gained by that age, while still being young enough to thoroughly enjoy life!!
shareAt first I thought it was because they wanted to show the Minions before Gru so 47 years ago makes perfect sense.
Yet, I was wrong. Since Gru made an appearance at the end.
no... you got it pretty much. it sets things up for that final sequence with the queen's crown. timeline unaffected.

Go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!
Because the writers didn't know how to put anything in for the parents.
If you're happy and you know it, go sit in the corner and think about your life.
probably most parents taking their kids to see this would have been born in the 70s or 80s...90s even! the writers must have been aiming at satisfying the grandparents.
shareWell, it sure pleased this Grandma! The kids asked me questions about the 60's. Historians and many in the music industry also agree that lyrically, it was an amazing decade. I briefly explained the important things about those years. They're too little to understand the assassination of two great men. However, I did explain how important MLK was. Too bad Motown music was featured. Probably the greatest music of the decade in the United States. The kids really liked the film as well.
shareI was born in 1969 and took my 14 1/2 year old son to the movie and I loved it. Even though i was too young when the music came out, I grew up listening to it on my parents records, then 8 track tapes, then casettes. I know have the music on my CD player. the other day, i had my son see these artists singing on Youtube.
shareKids probably won't get them. The references and the jokes are their for the adults. This is nothing new, it's been going on for decades.
Maybe it was to appeal to not just the young kids, but the grandparents who liked the music in 1968, therefor getting more money at the box office. How old are the ones who wrote Despicable me? Maybe 1968 is significant for them
