Yep, I picked that up. But I was still surprised that they made Napoleon out to be a bad guy; in France he's still considered a misunderstood hero.
Nevertheless, quite disappointed in this flick. I'm a (as yet unsold) screenwriter and went not just to be "entertained", as the G rating might suggest, but to see what they are getting away with these days. Honestly. I don't see, if this is a predominantly family-rated story, what lesson kids would get out of this. From Sesame Street to all the older Disney films and even newer ones, there's usually a theme and a lesson. I don't see that here. It was just a mash of cliches and, as is typical of today's films, rather extreme violence.
In France, Napoleon is indeed very much considered a big hero. Have a look at his splendid tomb next to the Eiffel tower.
Napoleon tried to conquer all of Europe, killing about 2 million of his own people in the process and 3 million other Europeans (of course some of the wars started after France felt "provoked" by another country). He simply abandoned his troops in Russia and in Egypt. His troops committed a large number of brutal massacres among civilians in Spain, Portugal, Germany and Russia. He had 4000 Ottoman prisoners of war killed in 1799. Also he reintroduced slavery to France in 1802. He invented the gas chambers to kill about 100.000 black slaves in Haiti and Guadeloupe in 1802. That was part of a genocide program; children under 12 have not been killed in the gas chambers, they got stabbed instead.
