It saddens me how this is making more money than Inside Out...

Inside Out has finally come out in my country, and I saw it yesterday. It is, by far, one of the best animated films I have ever seen. I could not believe how deeply emotional and joyfully funny it was. A few days ago, I also saw Minions, and was left highly disappointed. I thought it was rarely funny and was just a lot of nonsense, and this is coming from a BIG fan of Despicable Me 1 and 2. Inside Out had a lot of meaning, whereas Minions was just 90 minutes of yellow things goofing around with slapstick and pop culture mixed into it.

Thinking about it though, I think it's very clear why Minions is making more money than Inside Out:

1. Minions is a prequel to two very successful kids films, and kids and adults are very familiar with them. Inside Out is an original idea, so people might not know what they are going into.
2. As I mentioned, Inside Out has a lot of emotion and meaning, and I have read a lot of reviews complaining it made the kids upset/bored. Minions is just a lighthearted comedy. Therefore the latter would probably connect more with the average child.

If you enjoyed Minions, then good for you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. However, I personally think that Inside Out is the superior film. What is your favourite out of the two and why?

I actually thought that Minions was surprisingly no where near as bad as I thought it would be. I still liked IO better. It was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I am not surprised that Minions made more money for the reasons you mentioned. In the US (where I live) it appears that IO will come out on top in the end because Minions appears to be dropping like a rock (for an animated flick).

I have money for 1 animated feature, as I have to watch M:I-5 also. Which one should it be: Pixels or Minions?

My kids 10 and 5 hated Inside Out but loved Minions. I think word got out that Inside/Out wasn't as entertaining to kids as people thought it would be.

Besides it's not like either is a failure. Both are very successful and I doubt anyone is going to complain about the financials in the end.

It's like people who will get upset if Star Wars doesn't beat Avengers. Both are going to make Billions, does it really matter who makes more? Neither will be a flop.

I'm 67 but 99% with your kids. To be honest, I enjoyed INSIDE OUT, but it really is a pretentious attempt to educate little persons about adult psychological concepts in a way they will identify with. MINIONS is simply delightful fun, packed with surprisingly sophisticated (obviously WAY over the heads of some of the posters who didn't get it) "in jokes" where a lot of people expected Three Stooges-like slap stick. Both are good and worth seeing - but MINIONS is marvelous.

Honestly, I think they really held the Minions back. I didn't enjoy it, but I think that'a because there wasn't enough dumb slapstick.

I would still find IO the more enjoyable movie, but it feels like Miniins wasn't creative enough with its slapstick.

To answer your question, Inside Out. In part, it sort of reminds me of an 80's Don Bluth film. Like him back in the day, it treats its main audience and it's side audiences with respect. It's also funny but emotionally moving.

I thought Minions was funny and I did like it, although it played incredibly familiar given how much of the movie has been used in the trailers. Inside Out is the better movie of the two, though. In my opinion, of course. It's funnier and smarter, but emotionally rich and very poignant. Which is something Minions lacks but doesn't aspire to. Which is fine, but I don't think Minions was so well written. The final act was quite weak and seemed fairly inconsequential. It started out well and won me over quickly, but I fell in love with Inside Out. It's a masterwork and one of the best animated films ever made.

I didn't find it funny but agree with the rest.

It's interesting because Shaun the Sheep from what I've heard has similar humor but has gotten the much better reviews. I'm really curious to see it now and compare the two.

Yeah, Shaun the Sheep came out in the UK in February and I've heard nothing but good things about it. Also, I've heard it's a really smart film as well as funny. I, personally, haven't seen it yet but really want to.

It's coming out next week.

Inside out is a masterpiece no doubt about it. But Minions isnt bad at all. The difference is that minions is targeting for kids, kids love the minions. The kids doesnt understand all the complex plot from inside out however they enjoy the cheesy plot from minions; and if you are a father you will understand that you see what they want to see.

Here's the thing I have a problem with the mivie: they don'y really do anything creative with the slapstick. I don't even think they got the body language right, which is incredibly important when your characters have at best an incomprehensible labguage.

Same, I definitely like Inside Out more than Minions! Personally I find Minions kinda dumb, even annoying sometimes. But a lot of people do find their dumbness funny (which I don't), and whether it's adults or kids they love Minions' cute little faces, that's why it's more successfully in terms of making money. Plus the movie is simple, nothing special behind the plot so kids can enjoy it easily.

I for one LOVE GRU and the girls, without them I found this movie less interesting. I was so happy when little Gru comes out at the end!!! urgh I love him :')

But if you discuss the quality and content IO def wins, it's not just a kid story but you actually learn something about it (like all Pixar movie does) they teach you a lesson about emotions, it's something that are hard to grasp for kids. And kids being kids they just wanna have a fun time, have some comedy animation with cute yellow minions doing dumb things.

Minions was released almost the same day as the US release in my country, but i haven't seen Inside Out yet, why? Because it hasn't been released yet... I don't understand... It will be out on August 6, but that is a LONG way from the US release, and i don't understand why
