This Would Have Been Better....

I almost wish this had been a theatrical release,as opposed to a made for tv movie. I'm thinking if they had gone that route instead, the storyline could have been more mature, and not watered down for prime time viewing-like they would have been on the island for much longer than 3 months, and Emma definitely would have been pregnant and given birth. In the tv version,Emma and Dean almost start to give the impression that they're actually happy with their new lives on the island,so when they're actually rescued,it just doesn't seem right, kind of like it doesn't go with the rest of the movie. I figure in a theatrical version, several years could have passed before they were found, that might have been more realistic. Okay, are my ramblings making any sense here?? ;-)

That's exactly how I feel about the ending. I thought they were going to mature more. Even have their own "wedding" ceremony on the island. Then when they get back to reality, not be able to live without each other. Not in a co-dependentteenager kind of way, but in a we've grown because we've survived together kind of way.

The one morning on the island when Emma woke up and Dean was gone, she was frantic. Doesn't seem like she would be able to give him up once they got home. They were even holding hands when they got off the plane. I get why they were ripped apart by their families. But I feel they should have immediately went back to each other after the initial hugs.

Exactly. And you figure with a 2 hour tv movie, you need to allow time for commercials, which brings you down to about maybe an hour forty-give or take-my theory is in the theatre,it could have been longer, thus dramatically changing the storyline. And yes,you would have thought after they got off the plane and were reunited with their respective families, they would have gone directly back to each other-the fact they didn't doesn't compute with the rest of the film.

I know right? They spent three months together, bonding, sharing, having sex (and in Emma's case, losing her virginity) and we're supposed to believe that she was content going back to spending all her time with her shallow, boring friends?

I know!! The way the movie flows, you'd almost get the impression that it was scripted by two different screenwriters, who didn't bother to come together before filming!!

And I don't know why they would bother to water it down for teens (ie not having Emma become pregant). They were running ads for Bristol Palin's teen mom show the whole time.

reply

Good point!! And you almost know that there are impressionable teens out there who picked up the message-YOU CAN HAVE UNPROTECTED SEX ALL YOU WANT-AS LONG AS YOU'RE DOING IT ON A DESERTED ISLAND ON THE BEACH,YOU WON'T GET PREGNANT!! ROFL!! ;-)

reply

Oh I know! I still don't understand why they even had her throwing up and him asking about her being pregnant, if she wasn't. That made zero sense.

reply

That was definitely a scene that could have gone another way in a theatre movie-she definitely would have been pregnant, and like I said before, their actual rescue wouldn't have come until several years later. The one thing I felt was kind of odd about that interchange between Emma and Dean is#1.Assuming she wasn't on her period at that time-how did she know she wasn't pregnant?? And2.They never did say why Emma was vomiting!! ;-)

reply

I just thought she was in denial, that she actually was pregnant. Maybe they were unsure if they wanted her pregnant or not and had a different ending at first. I guess they thought it would steal Bristol's thunder.

reply

Might be. And remember the one scene when Emma's back home in her bedroom, going through clothes, and Stacy comes in to talk?? I was almost sure Emma was going through her clothes to find bigger things that would fit her,as she found out after they were home that she really was pregnant. You almost wonder if the original script had her being pregnant, and that version never made it to the final cut. :-)

I know-it probably would have made the whole vomiting-"you think maybe you're-pregnant?" scene a bit more believable if they had Emma explain how she knew she wasn't pregnant.What-did the producers think a little talk of monthly cycles would turn everybody off? Plus-I'm sure Dean had to know when she was on her period those three months-I don't think she had that many tampons stuffed in her messenger bag!!

reply

Yah, "No. I'm not" And I thought, they're not gonna explain that at all?? I'm sure she didn't have an EPT in her bag! lol I mean, she replied immediately with no hesitation or pause to think about it. Like she had just come from her gynecologist or something. lol

"How in God's name did she plug it up?" ROFL!! Yeah the writers are messing with our minds-but it's giving us great discussion material though-lol!!

Well I thought of a couple possible reasons for the writing which I had thought made no sense. I still don't agree with it, but think about these possible reasons from the writers' view: One idea, it was a lame excuse to bring up the topic of children, so they could agree they both want kids some day. OK, nothing unusual there, but now we see they both seem receptive to the idea of having kids TOGETHER. Remember, he smiles. So at least in his mind, he's not just thinking of having kids some day, but of HER having HIS kids. So I saw a serious desire by him to stay with her long term on or off the island. Her look I wasn't so sure about. It seemed a bit uncertain, maybe even scared. So maybe she answered quickly simply because she didn't want him to think she's pregnant, but she's not really sure. While she answered quickly, she didn't seem too convincing to me. So of course the story is wide open for a pregnancy sequel.

That withdrawal method really worked well for them-didn't it?? ;-)
