A secret? Or ignorance?

When they arrive at the airport, they're holding hands in front of everybody. Even if their families and friends magically forget that, there were cameras. So why is it that people can't see they're in love? When they found out they hand been living in an island alone, didn't they think "Gee, is there a possibility something might have happened between them?".

I get that he was an anti-social and didn't like that she was so popular. But that doesn't explain why they were BOTH pretending like nothing had happened. If they weren't planning on dating after returning, why did they hold hands in front of the world?

I noticed them holding hands and wondered the same thing...

Support upon re-entering the world, mayhaps.

She let her family and friends influence her and she shunned him. It was evident when he came to her window and when attempting to kiss her she moved away. Then again in school in the hallway and out front. She fell back into her old "Prom Queen" lifestyle. Fed up with being shunned (ignored) he then refused to take her call. I think it was obvious that he wanted to continue the relationship publicly but she was hesitant. She was accustom to over shadowing people (although unintentionally) and being the center of attention, he wasn't.

I don't think that was the case at all! She was a people pleaser. She never overshadowed anybody, but was more of a puppet or doll for them to live out their idea of what her perfect life should be. She just never stood up for what she wanted, or said no to anybody. That's why she wanted to keep her relationship with Dean hidden. She was afraid of everybody judging her. Which is why I think SHE should've made the grand gesture at the end of the movie, not Dean!
