How Dean killed the black panther?

Is that really possible to kill a black panther with a single strike of a pocketknife? Realistically, when Dean lied down, panther would jump over and scrag him, that's the way how panters hunt, however Dane was all allright and just killed the animal with that funny pocketknife.

panthers are very good at hunting so, so a human on the ground with nothing but a knife, has a small chance of killing one. all I can say is that the kid got lucky.

I just assumed Dean turned and killed the panther in one shot to the heart as they were both falling to the ground - you know, epic movie cgi style - but we just didn't get to see it. :)

If you can overlook that panthers can not be found in that region on those islands, the question is very relevant and it's one of the things that makes this movie a waste of time.

I think the skeleton was an animal smuggler who died from a diseased monkey bite. The monkey and the panther (who was probably a cub at the time) are the only survivors left from his cargo. Following this logic the panther is probably pretty weak and straggly having little to eat on the island. I imagine he'd only been surviving on birds, fish and any other animals that were also in the smuggler's cargo. Thereby he would have been easier to overpower than a full grown healthy panther like what is depicted on screen.

Dean probably had some scary adrenaline running through him from sprinting through the jungle.

Also: Kinda the way a small person can overpower a big one.

The way it looked to me it was an extremely luck shot that when he turned and the panther leap on him his knife went into the panther's throat. From that point on it was only a matter of time.

I think the above explanation is the most realistic - after all, he did fall first. So he might have turned and just put his knife up out of instinct. BTW, after a previous scene where he bemoaned the lack of meat, I wonder why they didn't show the 2 humans in the next scene with the panther over a spit being roasted for supper?
