It's not at all uncommon. My children went to private school in Connecticut and their class had fund raisers, and parents contributed.
Also, several years ago, there was a young lady, Natalee Holloway from Alabama, who went missing during an unofficial trip to Aruba with her classmates and several chaperones to celebrate graduation.
She failed to make the flight back to the U.S. and her packed luggage and passport were found in her hotel room.
It was reported that there was wild partying with lots of drinking. On two occasions Natalee didn't show up for breakfast due to excessive drinking. Natalie graduated with honors and had a full scholarship to the University of Alabama, where she planned to study medicine.
A local Joran Van der Sloot was arrested twice on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance, but was released due to lack of evidence.
Later a journalist had Van der Sloot on hidden camera, whilst under the influence of marijuana claimed he was with her when she accidentally died and his friend disposed of her body, which later he denied, but also said something about her being sold into slavery.
A horrifying ordeal for her family, to say the least. God bless you Natalee xo
