Carol is named as best gay film of all time by panel of experts

Well the "experts" were idiots then. There is no contest here. Not even in the top 10. OMG.

I'd say it was just accidentally overlooked, because BITWC is certainly one of the greatest gay-themed films I've ever seen.

One of the greatest "gay-themed films"?

It's one of the best films that I've ever seen. In 2013, which was a powerhouse year for great films (12 years, Gravity, Llewyn Davis, Fruitvale Station, Rush, Nebraska, Wolf of Wall St, etc.) Blue for me was at the top if the list that year. Really something special on every level of production. All of it. Mesmerizing. Period.

It comes back to the fact that some people's idea of "gay films" is films that are completely inaccessible to straight people or non-gays. It doesn't occur to people like this that a straight male with bisexual tendencies might actually RELATE to a gay woman with bisexual tendencies because all human beings have SOME THINGS in common. No, the only reason a straight guy would watch a movie like this, according to these idiots, is because Adele and Lea give him a boner. Well, so does Rooney Mara (costar of "Carol") truth be told, but that's really beside the point. If being sexually attracted to someone precludes you from relating to them as a human being, then gays and lesbians shouldn't be able to relate to EACH OTHER.

"Carol" is a more STEREOTYPICAL gay movie and I'm sure it also appeals more the "gay community" for that reason, but that doesn't really make it a BETTER movie. "Carol" certainly isn't a bad movie, but sometimes these things are just much more about gender/sexual politics than artistic appreciation.

Which film do you think should have been named the best then?
Surely not 'Blue is the Tedious Colour'

reply

Carol won't be remembered in 10 years. It's such a self-righteous cheese-fest with the kind of hammy generic writing that all the critics praising it would cringe at if its lead characters weren't perfectly victimized lesbians. It's a movie-of-the-week effort that's saved by some good performances and nothing more.

BTW I love both BITWC and Carol
