Re: 7.8 on IMDB and made just over half what it took to make...
Firstly; this is a French movie (French-Belgian-Spanish co-production), which cost €4 million to make (about $4.18 million today, but because of changes in exchange rates about $5.33 million at the time). The movie made $19.5 million worldwide, with (I think) close to half of that in France alone, so I expect the producers were perfectly happy.

including France) as $5.18 million - go figure...]
Secondly; the film's IMDb rating is based mainly on Non-US voters by a ratio of around 5:1. This makes sense for a movie whose market was mainly in Europe...
