How long after the war ended did they have to keep using ration books and coupons?

Awhile. Long enough. Everyone was eating powdered eggs while Churchill was stuffing his mouth with real food. That's life.

Rationing was over in 1954.

It continued for several years, with specific items being un-rationed in stages (as noted in a sign in the series which announced that bacon was still under ration -- implying that some things were no longer being rationed). Here's the breakdown:

i believe rationing ended July 4, 1954 or 1955. England was a mess after the war with great shortages. So for England they suffered through about 15 years of rationing.
