Who was in charge of casting for this film

Jonah Hill and James Franco are both decent actors, but you don't put them in the same movie when it's a drama and the last film they were both in was the stoner movie, "This is the End." It will make it to difficult to take it seriously.

Jonah Hill's next movie after This Is the End was Wolf of Wall Steet. Considering he was nominated for an Oscar for that, I don't think people will have trouble taking him or Franco seriously as long as they put on good performances.

reply

The issue isn't with their acting abilities. I was disappointed that Hill didn't win for Wolf of Wall Street. The issue is having both actors in the same thriller when they are more known for their comedic work together. If the tone of the film was lighter or in the realm of a dark comedy it would work similar to Key and Peele in the Fargo TV series, but it appears that True Story is going to be more serious. For Hill to be taken seriously in a film with a dark tone, it's best just to separate him from things that are similar to his comedic side.

Wow - this might be the dumbest thing I've read on here since last week. Two actors that do both serious and comedic roles in the same movie is going to screw up said movie? That's just silly. Have a good long bitter life. Seems that's what you do all day. Sit around and think of negative things that could happen but most likely won't. Sad really.

Mngirl1974, hate much? It's sad really.

I would have agreed with you before the movie but DEFINITELY agree with the OP after the movie. I felt like they were fighting to keep a straight face in some scenes, like they just got done laughing at some hilarious joke moments before a serious scene was shot.

reply

Yes. I couldn't agree more. As what I said in my review of the movie.

reply

I can understand why someone would think that on face value, but the bottom line is that they are ACTORS and that's what they do. They adapt. Wolf of Wall Street was essentially a comdey with a serious theme, a lot like a number of Scorcese's gangster flicks. If you haven't, and what to see what a good serious actor Jonah Hill is, I suggest you watch Moneyball. And James Franco was always a straight actor. It is only since his collaborations with the likes of Hill and Seth Rogan that he has been seen as a comedian. Sorry, but based on those factors I have to disagree. Not seen the movie, but based on the trailer I hope to soon - and think they will both be superb in it.

reply

Are you kidding, you wanted him to win for WOWS???? LOL

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

reply

Sorry but your issue is most definitely with their acting abilities.

reply

I'm with you.

I love Francos independent works, from the Hart Crane movie to the William Faulkner movie, he's got a wonderful spectrum as an actor, being able to pull off both pot smoking humor and dense poetry. and Hill really showed us in The Wolf Of Wall Street that he has some varied skills as an actor too! he was surprisingly amazing in that role!

but.. I watched the prison-scene clip from this movie that is up here on imdb and I was just waiting for them to crack up a joke or smile or hand out a sarcasm. felt like they were acting their own parody. with the two of them together I just get distracted by their comedic connection. it has nothing to do with their acting skills, I just feel that it's a bold move of the casting director getting them together in a serious movie so soon after This Is The End.

Wolf of Wallstreet was a comedy

Franco is a drama actor. Unlike Hill, he is firstly a drama actor.

Feel your heart beat.

reply

If their dramatic skills are up to it, it's far from impossible.

reply

I don't think that you should waste your money or time on it.

I agree.

Jerry Lewis is a great actor and so is Dean Martin.

But togheter in a drama..would look like a spoof

reply

Why don't you just watch the film and you may be pleasantly surprised? I saw the film last night and I was skeptical going in as well, but the only thing I can compare this to is seeing Steve Carrel turn in Foxcatcher and take everyone by surprise. This is a performance based film, and I was not disappointed.

reply

We liked it a lot. Not a masterpiece but really surprisingly suspenseful, and at first I didn't even think that was Franco. He made a horrifying person even creepier, well done.

reply

I wasn't distracted by their comedic past, it was just that Hill seemed to be sleeping through half his scenes and Franco was not the right actor for this part.

reply

Agreed. But I will add the Franco phoned it in also. I thought Longo was supposed to be charming and charismatic? Epic fail with Franco. He also looked like a hobo for most of the movie, not an Ex-Jehovah (think that is correct but too lazy too check).

I thought Jonah Hill was very good in his role, but Franco seemed mis-cast. He had the intelligent charming thing down, but he didn't really have the necessary creep factor. Without adequate background info into Longo's character I just couldn't believe him as a potential killer.

I don't know why the filmmakers threw in the Jehovah's Witness factor and then failed to explore it further. I found the film seriously lacking in terms of Longo's character. We never really discover why he killed his wife and children aside from feeling ashamed that he couldn't provide for them. Also, how did he get captured in Mexico? It's never really explained. And is he still on death row (the end credits didn't say).

Finkel's character is the more fully rounded one; it's based on his book after all, and perhaps that's why Hill gives the better performance.

And all the pieces matter (The Wire)
