Why set this film in present day?

Why does this movie take place in present day? The murder was committed in 2001 and tried in 2003. After learning this, it cheapened the movie for me.

Have things changed so much in the past 12 years? Other than a cell phone here or there, I wouldn't have any reason to think that this movie wasn't set in 2003. Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention, though.

reply

I feel technology changed a lot in the last 12 years. But maybe I am just nit-picking.

There weren't I-Phones in 2003, so the prison interaction Between Franco and Felicity Jones was fabricated. And the New York times office was using current technology.

reply

Yeah, and?? Changing the timeline has no relevance whatsoever. And you're right. You're nit-picking and you've pretty much spoiled the movie for yourself.

reply

they wouldn't allow a cell phone in a prison visit anyway..

talk about a fabrication!

BOOOOOOMMMMMM now the whole movie is ruined...........

Oh lord, why are you even complaining about the little things. It's based on a true stoey, doesn't mean it has to be the exact.

If you read up on Clint Eastwood's American Sniper, every time frame in that movie was off. The long distance shot he took was fabricated.

In the movie Hatchi, it took place in present day starring Richard Gere in the United States when in reality, it was in Japan during the early 1900's.

Wassup with people complaining about a movie over the littlest details? Did it make for a worst movie because it's set in present day? Like someone said, thimgs haven't changed much in the past decade or so. An iPhone was your biggest issue, lol. Every person who's probably been involved in a high school play think he's a hot shot director now.

I don't feel a 10 year difference in technology is a little thing. Especially if the viewer is to expect that this is based on a true story. And the main focus of the movie is someone reporting interactions with a prisoner.

I got the sense that this movie was more fiction, which is why I didn't fully appreciate the story.

Also, I never made a comment about American Sniper or Hatchi. Not sure what that has to do with anything.

Wassup with people that averaged a C in high school English thinking they can come up with relevant metaphors.

Time travelers! Mike is the murderer, and came from the future. He brought back iPhones and MacBooks. Mike (older version) and Chris (younger version) are the same person, they draw same creepy stuff. The Quote:

Christian Longo: Sometimes you have to accept looking one way in order to protect something more important.
Obviously he was protecting the Time Machine.

I think this was a spoiler, but more on that in Part II of the movie.

Thanks a lot jerk, how a spoiler alert next time.

Now I really didn't notice the things people are mentioning in this thread about certain products being used when they were not around in the years the movie was about but I do agree in knocking a half mark or full point off for this sort of thing if it is noticed or pointed out by people. I thank the person who mentioned the time line was off for American Sniper so I will go and knock a point off it for that sort of mistake.

Update: It turns out I didn't give that movie a score so no need to be knocking a point off. Sometimes I just don't feel like giving a movie a score and instead just comment on it.

It seems stupid when I type it out, but it really is all about money. It is more expensive to dress every scene to look like 2003 than today. This was not a high budget film, so they had to cut cost.
