I know this is a question that many of you wont necessarily know the answer to, but why do you think Mike continues contact with Christian?! I mean he seems "done" with him and his lies by the end of the film , why continue a "relationship" then?
I had the same question. There seems to be something wrong with Mike. Mike's wife, OTOH, understood that there was no need to continue any contact since Christian was a veritable monster. For some reason, that never sunk in with Mike. And it's one of the reasons I didn't care for the film, even though it was based on a real life story.

He calls mike once a month and he continues to accept the calls. I know it would be had to understand but they did develop a friendship of sorts, and at first mike thought that longo was innocent . I am guessing that after so much time shared through letters calls and visits it's hard to let go , but that's just me guessing
Tbh, if I was the wife, I would have left him years ago. I couldn't fathom my husband staying in contact with a guy who killed his wife and kids and showed no remorse. I would want to know, why does this man interest you so. You can never make plans on the first Sunday of the month because Daddy has to wait for the murderer to call. GTFOHWTBS
And I've had been the opposite I'd have found it fascinating but I've always been Intrested in what makes people do bad things Truth? you can't handle the truth
I think an important element in friendship, is how the other person makes you feel about yourself. And so, after being fired from the NYT and being made into a pariah, Mike was left in a very vulnerable state. It seems likely then, that Chris took advantage of that and made Mike feel that he (Mike) was worthy of redemption. So despite all that happened afterwards, Mike felt a bond of friendship towards Chris.
You could also make the argument that even though Chris was just using Mike, plain and simple, that the verdict in his trial left Chris in a vulnerable state, and Mike, by remaining in contact with Chris, made Chris feel like perhaps he (Chris) was worthy of redemption and that he did deserve to have a friend.
So it's plausible then, that the two men did indeed develop a genuine friendship, through -potentially- the most unlikely genesis.
I don't know if this will really make sense but some people are very much in their own head. They think and rethink things and tend to obsess on things and feel things deeply. He may even feel an odd sense that he is forever connected to Longo and after he made money off of the family being murdered he needs to pay the price of being stuck listening to this complete sicko. The wife is just a different type of person and seemed to be able to see what Longo was from the very beginning.
The answer to this question is simple - the movie plot didn't follow the real life events. So you have a movie ending but then they put the factual part noted at the end so the director contradicted his own ending to the film. Rookie error. In real life they were probably friends and finkle is probably turning a blind eye to the fact he's child killer because he made a nice bit of money off him.
He's intrigued. I think they continue to both use each other. One for a grip on a life and one for the exsusive look into the face of a monster. Plus, Chris has no one else in the entire world and is going to killed. I suspect I'd find an obligation to at least pay witness if I were someone's only lifeline on the planet.
