Okay Louie's lack of expression has become weird

I remember someone saying it when he first appeared and a lot of us argued he was shy and/or traumatized.

Caseys giving this "heartfelt" speech and the kid looks like he's somewhere else. He never changes expressions, says words, makes eye contact or does anything. It's made me really appreciate good child actors. I can finally agree that this was bad casting.

It is too bad he never smiles. He looks really sad all the time. Maybe they can recast him like Modern Family recast Lily.

reply

I was the one who started this line of thought, but now I wonder, given his maternal situation, if he has any reason at all to smile.

reply

LMAO!

Developmental delays are normal in cases of neglect with kids that age. Louie needs a full time mum to counter that but Scabby won't take even a couple weeks off work and goes into Molly's every night when she's not on shift.

reply

Yes, technically that is true. And I agree that Louie would have some sort of emotional delay or disconnection....

But how on earth did they do such a good job of finding not 1 but TWO kids (I'm assuming he is played by twins like 99% of kids in shows are) who are so phenomenal at a lack of any type of emotion is beyond me.

And they are what? 3 years old...4 at the most. You can't tell a toddler to "act depressed" and they'll know exactly what you mean and do it to perfection.

These kids barely blink. They are like robots. It really is weird.

reply

It's funny, writers always have actors WAY over-do it with affection when it comes to a scene with their kids. It's like they feel the need to hit us over the head with the notion that they really love their kids and love being parents. Every scene when they're with their kids, you'll see a hug and a kiss on the head. It never feels authentic. Authentic would be: "Drink your milk. Hey....hey hey HEY! (Kid drops milk glass on the floor). That kind of stuff. Instead of realism....we get overkill of contrived affection with a joyless kid. Parenting that kid would be a drag. You'd think he would even ACCIDENTALLY smile once in a while, due to gas or something. But no. Louie is a sad-sack.

reply

Thank you OP!!!! I posted a few times on this topic and got met with long explanations about abuse and neglect and the trauma caused to Louie. If true, then Louie should be in therapy. He never smiles, nor is he ever happy. It comes across as exactly what it is - a bored 4 year old. Cute kid, but bad casting.

reply

l recently read an amusing post somewhere about sad little Louie and it said he is sad because be can see into his future. And his future is the horrendous Scabby! LMAO.

reply

So many kids out there who can act and they cast that kid who has no expression... Weird.

reply

I was thinking te same thing he never say more than three words, if he is so traumatized why ins't he getting any professional help?.

agreed and if so traumatized would any normal parent leave their kid with a sitter, but its scabby gabby so rules dont apply. To be hoinest the way she went on to get him was like that south park ep where paris hilton wants butters as her new pet

reply

They need to replace this child actor. He is frozen in every single scene and has the same face all the time. Seriously he is not cut out for this.

reply

Well....and the other thing is....the writers show Gabby and Casey acting as if parenting this kid brings incredible joy to their lives. How could it?? This kid doesn't seem to be any fun AT ALL. He's a sad sack.

reply

Clearly, you fools have never met traumatized children. I have, and Louie is not that far off. He could have all sorts of developmental delays beyond his mother's neglect. If his mother was a junkie, then he could have all sorts of physical issues, too. You need to let a damaged child get settled in his/her new environment, then introduce therapy, etc. Again, let's remember this show has many characters; they can't possibly go into so much detail with a firehouse member's child. If they did, you'd all be griping about that, too.

As for Casey and Dawson working, how do you expect them to pay rent and put food on the table if they don't work? Finding a steady, caring person to stay with Louie while they're at work could really help the child learn to trust and relate to adults in a more positive way. These things take time. It can take an entire childhood and then more to heal some children; unfortunately, I've known a few who never healed.

So....what makes Gabby and Casey so over-the-moon joyful and giddy about parenting the little sad sack??

I gotta admit I was one of those people who insisted Louie was just a very traumatized kid...but quite a long time has passed and Louie is still the same expressionless monotone kid he's always been since 1. Even if he's really traumatized, he should still show at least some progress by now...but I don't really blame the twins (who plays Louie) for Louie's lack of expressions, I think the problem is the directors. I remember someone on this board posted a link to a video a while ago that showed one of the twins being able to show many different kinds of expressions very easily on command, so it proves that the boys can show different facial expressions on command...so there's no reason for Louie to be so expressionless on the show...unless that's what the directors want. On the set it's the directors who direct the actors, directing them how to act in certain ways in each scene, their mannerisms etc. So I think the real problem is probably the directors and not the twins...I suspect the directors probably told the boys not to show emotions in order to portray Louie as traumatized & shy. However, it's been a while now so Louie should at least show some signs of improvement by now...even though my friend who works at child services says that sometimes it can take several years for traumatized foster children to recover in reality, but this is a fictional show. With so many unbelievable and unrealistic things happening on the show already, you'd think there would be some progress with Louie by now in terms of him opening up to Casey and Dawson and showing some more expressions...Louie always just looks bored and sad. And the timelines in this show can be pretty tricky too...sometimes weeks or months would pass and we wouldn't know because they don't tell us on the show...for all we know, Louie has been around for about a year now, it certainly feels that way. In many other TV shows where traumatized foster children were involved, typically it only took about several weeks or several months for the kid to recover and show some more emotions...Louie in comparison is still the same old expressionless and emotionless kid he was since day 1...I blame this more on the directors.

I wish I could post that video here of one of the boys showing many different facial expressions easily on command, I could've sworn someone had posted it on this board a while ago and now I can't find it for some reason...maybe the person who originally posted the link to that video deleted it? I don't know...such a pity...

I would like to see that video. So two kids are this bad at acting? Did you notice on this final episode for "louie" (thank heavens) they had him talking off screen!! If the kids can act, then how do you explain them not being able to say lines? I am hugely glad this story line has ended. The actress playing the adopted mom was acting her butt off to a wall of a face. It was awkward to watch.

this is not the same video I was referring to but I found this different video of the twins during a photoshoot:

http://www.facebook.com/vlynnonline/videos/10102759733583828/?pnref=story

this video shows that the boys can still do what they're told and smile when they're told to smile...so there's no reason for Louie to be so expressionless and emotionless unless that's what the directors want. And as for Louie's lack of dialogue...well that's not the boys fault, blame that on the writers for not giving Louie enough lines to say.

you can also check out this facebook page for the twins that I found, it has alot of videos of the boys being more expressive:

They did not follow directions at all in that video. I do not think they are good actors. They are young, but I am sure they could have found better kids with some charisma on screen at least. I am just glad that story is over. It was really starting to annoy me every time that kid/s were in a scene.
It was so glaringly bad. I felt sorry for anyone who had to act around them.

reply

did you even watch that video carefully? when the boys were told to smile they smiled, when they were told to turn they turned, when they were told to put their hands up they did etc...it shows they could still follow instructions. If the directors had told them to smile in the cameras then I'm sure they would've at least smiled sometimes on the show.
