I saw the preview and it looks good but it was in and out of the theater so fast I didn't have a chance to see it I normally don't see a movie on the first week because of crowds I'm not even sure if it lasted 2 weeks here in Los Angeles I thought they may have pulled it to show Oscar nominated movies then put it back. But no it's gone and not coming back
It was actually quite a great film and the critics seemed to agree as well (It holds an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and was certified fresh). The problem was it had virtually no star appeal in the states (despite having GREAT performances across the board, some of the best of the year so far), and not many people want to see a film about submarine travel to begin with (although I'm sure anyone with enough sense who actually watched the trailer realized it was much more than that and went and saw the film itself like I did). I definitely feel this film should have been pushed back to at least October 2015 where it could've gotten some Oscar chances because it really is a fun film to watch.

Regardless of what one thinks of Black Sea, it never would have possessed any "Oscar chances"—none.

dolores craeg be good to one another. http://doloresgrace.blogspot.com/ I saw it twice. very good film. law did a great job. there was no marketing behind it.....a lot of people didn't even know about it. too bad. a very tense nail biter.
I could see that, and the Academy has picked somewhat obscure performances in somewhat obscure films for acting nominations in the past. I think the other guy is right that it's less likely with something like Black Sea, but not because the quality isn't high enough. I think it has more to do with the film being outside the typical studio structure as well as not making enough of a splash. imo
Woll said! It really was entertaining. Rarely do I see new films today that I could watch more than once. Right after watching this I want to watch it again. It has a lot going on. Very smart. The director did an amazing job. Every actor was just spot on. Jude Law really shows his acting abilities in this film.
I would not call Black Sea horrible, but it was definitely a disappointment for me—a lazy, shallowly written TV-style movie. You can see my comments here:
The film only lasted two weeks because movies that do virtually no business only last two weeks. The movie's hackneyed nature, combined with a lack of star power and a lack of broad appeal, failed to attract viewers. Television advertising also seemed to be lacking, which is unsurprising for what was probably a low-budget film.
Lol You must be an idiot to call this movie lazy, shallowly written. Or your some kind of mouthpiece. Either way the fact is, what Joekiddlouischama has to say about this movie is absolute bull *beep*
anyone who talks about how this or that film is the worst film a scene is full of crap. this would only make sense for very off beat, arty, or very low budget pictures with actually bad actors. I saw a very bad movie years ago called Fear Island I believe, and the acting was so bad it made Keanu Reeves look like Laurence Olivier.
so stop the hyperbole, and just admit you were just disappointed.
Im a huge fan of the Submarine Genre, I even thought Below was a great film. SO when I found this I was pumped, but then I started watching it.
First, the movie attacks Businesses, Corporations, IE: Capitalism. Its one of those movies where they make some faceless, nameless Corporation the bad guy. Well, that doesnt work in this movie and that doesnt fly in America. America is a Capitalist country, Europe, where this movie was made, is full of Socialists. So thats one downfall the movie has as the Corp and its decisions via the corporate stooge make absolutely no sense at all.
Secondly, except for the kid and the corporate stooge, these are all experienced, professional submariners, yet almost none of them act like it. Being in a sub is the epitome of trusting others, yet a majority of these people all act like they are in a building and can just walk out of it if the sh*t hits the fan. Jude Law plays the captain but hes one of the weakest captains on film, no one seems to respect him and no one wants to follow him.
Which is why the whole plot stinks and is so wooden, these men arent criminals, they are all sailors/submariners, but most of them act like paranoid criminals from the time they get in the sub. Many actions characters take are detrimental to their well being and the success of the "mission", to the point it makes you shake your head.
Also, for the submariners out there, how many times can a sub crash into the ocean floor? I know the first time it crashed on to the corral reef, but nevertheless, this old rusting submarine surived two crashes and 2 explosions inside it, yet it only sprung a leak at the very end with the last explosion.
Oh, and that kid took a pressure plate blow-out to the face, and then gets up like nothing happened. In real life it would have killed him.
I dont think the switching out of shafts would have worked in real life either, it made a nice sub-plot, but the shaft being the same fit was the least of this movies problems.
Clearly you haven't watched any James Cameron movies where an evil corporation (Weyland-Yutani, Cyberdine, the company from Avatar) is screwing over the protagonist. I could draw a direct parallel from the Scoot McNairy character in this one to Burke from Aliens.
Not to mention the countless other American movies (many of which quite popular) that feature evil corporate characters. Frankly, your just talking out your ass.
