So, they were just killing each other??

So, the English guy killed the Russian translator for no reason, and this whole damage follows with more dead, and...that's it?? They let him go?? "Weeeell, okaaaay, what's done is done, let's forget it and move on...".

I think that this scene killed the movie, and generally the whole immature and unnecessary "I don't like you, I'll kill you" attitude. It was happening throughout the movie so easily! I mean, the young guy goes to the other Russian to offer his help, and the stupid Russian, boom, throws him a heavy thing that could kill him! Why?? Just like that! These guys were going on a mission where they would earn 2 million dollars EACH, and they were fighting each other like kids in high school! "I don't lllllike you, you Englllllish pig, I'lllll killllll you..." (Russian accent). Instead of thinking "ok, we don't like them, *beep* it, we'll endure them for as long as the mission lasts, get the money, go back home, and we don't have to see them ever again".

I was anticipating this movie, like a new smaller "Abyss" thing or whatever, but the "I'll kill you" scenes destroyed it. If the movie was sci-fi, they could make up a story that a strange "alien power" makes them delusional and start killing each other, or whatever, but since they didn't have that in the plot, they were just...killing each other!

Great atmosphere and great Jude Law performance, bollocks movie and ending.

Pretty much, yeah.

It's a shame the screenplay was written by a ten year old, because the acting and cinematography were both superb.

reply

Yeah I thought the same thing. Their actions were pretty stupid but it was an otherwise good film. I was on the edge of my seat. But yeah the plot was frustrating.

reply

The Fraser character was inconsistent and his actions were pretty much dictated by whatever the plot demanded to get to the next obstacle, but I otherwise enjoyed the film quite a bit. It was a gripping adventure film.

reply

Agreed. The plot devices were ridiculous, almost killed the whole movie. It turned out okayish at the end for me.

This was the biggest flaw in the movie for me (ex-Navy officer).

Submariners are a pretty buttoned down lot. They undergo some pretty rigid psych exams/training to make sure of that. When you are 600 feet down you want to be sure your shipmates have your back and aren't going to go to pieces.

In this movie though, they almost immediately start yelling and bickering with each other.

I suppose some allowance has to be made for the stress of their current situation... unemployed, advanced age, etc.... but it took a bit dose of suspension of disbelief to get into the basic premise of this movie.

The initial guy with the knife (Ben Mendohlsen - spelling?) would have / should have been locked up immediately as unstable. Sure he was the only qualified diver but he could have been released long enough to get the gold with the understanding/motivation that he would still be entitled to his full share. (Ironically, deep divers tend to be even MORE buttoned down than submariners making it doubly unlikely that he would be the one to go Full Metal Jacket...)

When your CO has to order everyone back to their posts under threat of gunfire, your mission is never going to end well...

reply

It doesn't matter if they are all buttoned down if they are from two very different groups. I don't know if it is true about the Russian superstition, but they had two very different ideas about what makes a successful crew.

You can't just assume submariners from Japan would be identical to those from Norway, because assumptions make an ass out of you and umption!

It was a poorly written film.

I agree with you and other responder Laplante. The childish behavior on board was really contradictory to the mission. Especially after the beginning planning dialog and crew choosing scenes. I new a submariner in real life and he was always focused and detailed, even on holiday and that was many years after his service.

I wasn't looking for flaws but another did jump out at me. Was it possible for the sunken sub to remain mostly water free inside as they walked about looking at a few skeletons while searching for the gold and drive shaft?
