does it get better??

I have watched 2 episodes so far, and honestly it has looked like amateur hour, I can't believe how poor the acting is.

Does the show get better?

How is this getting such high ratings on IMDB and a quality series like Mosaic got panned?

If it hasn't clicked with you yet I doubt it will later. I liked it from the first episode. Maybe it's not your type of show. Nothing wrong with that.

It seems that I'm the only one here who actually enjoys this one a lot.

You don't see the poor, unnatural acting? It really bothers me, and the story (thus far) hasn't been enough to make up for it.

reply

I'm rarely bothered by poor acting unless it's some soap opera level crap. And I don't think the acting here is that bad at all. I've been a fan of Joel Kinnaman since the Killing days and I'm glad to see him in a another leading role. The story might be simple but it does get more complicated as the show progresses.

reply

Oh and it does have some really cool action that I like as well.

reply

That's actually yet another aspect of the show I find problematic - none of the fights look realistic, it's like either they are poorly choreographed or the actors haven't trained enough.

That was actually so weird to observe - I really haven't seen that sort of people in movies or series in a very long time, or at least certainly not in anything that purports to be "quality".

You're not the only one mate. I just watched the pilot and loved it!

reply

Glad to hear you're loving it too!

I'm not so sure it is the acting that is poor as much as the poorly written dialogue. Some of the lines are so cringe worthy that I'm amazed the actors could even keep a straight face spouting the lines.

In the end I was left thinking that if you merged the Lifetime and SciFi channel together is the kind of junk they would spit out. The scifi angle was weak and the story line seemed like something dreamed up for a lifetime movie. Only thing I could really say was well done were some of the wide city shots though even they looked like a Blade Runner ripoff.

I'm also trying to figure out why women that were rich and had access to unlimited clones would continue to keep using a body in its 40's instead of a younger body... At least we got an explanation for why the dude wanted to use an older dudes body for the distinguished air it brought him... but the wife? Come on, what woman would choose a menopausal body when they could just as easily have the body they had in their 20's?

I was like you after 2 episodes and was really struggling to connect with the show but after Episode 3 it really kicked into gear and by Episode 5, I am quite hooked!

I can’t tell you how much I did NOT enjoy the Pilot and I jumped on all the message boards afterwards to read up to see if the show was worth investing my time in?

It seemed that everybody was of the same couple of opinions - that the time jumping in the Pilot between the old Takeshi and his new 250 year later Sleeve/Body was confusing, the backstory between him and his Sister was uninteresting and everyone seemed to universally agree that the female lead, Detective Ortega was super annoying - especially in the way she was stalking him.

Well by Episode 5 you understand why she has such a vested interest in him and I have found I actually like her - something I never thought I’d say after the pilot or even the first 4 episodes.

I love everything about Joel Kinnamans dry portrayal as the main character and have really fallen hard for the universe that has been built/ delivered on the screen and I am especially in love with Poe and the A.I Hotel.

For what it’s worth, I think the show has definitely improved and is worth sticking with.

If you are not hooked by Episode 5, I will be very surprised.

Sorta?
And then it just goes weird again.

Spoiler-ish (probably):
It gets "better" in the way that some of the dumber things about this show get explained.
The kid in the museum? I thought it was shitty writing/acting, but it's not just that, it has a purpose.
Ortega tailing Kovacs for no apparent reason? We get an explanation for that as well.

What never gets explained is why the dialogue is constantly terrible and the reason for them lying in bed as though they're posing for a magazine cover.

Ep 7 was just... awful.
I really disliked the direction ep 8 took and took a break from watching.

reply

So you didn't actually finish the season yet? Are you planning to, or do you feel you've wasted enough of your time on this show already?

reply

Nope, haven't finished yet, and to be honest, I'm not sure if I want to.
If it hadn't been for the "reveal" in ep 8, I might've sat through it, but it just got too ridiculous and left a bad taste in my mouth.

reply

It gets better, then gets a lot worse again. The show peaks in the middle and then changes gears a bit. Then end is just terrible. Goes from feeling like a cool future movie to feeling like a dumb tv show. The show wrote a shit ton of checks it didn't bother cashing.
