There's a terrific fan over on Tumblr, named penfairy, who's been writing up great analyses of the Broadchurch cinematography, staging and costuming which all point to Alec and Ellie being two halves of a whole. She's also drawn a lot of comparisons to the Thomas Hardy stories and characters that have inspired Chris Chibnall and it all points to their destiny to be a couple.
So we'll see.
My husband I just finished the second season and we were both disappointed they didn't end up together also! Everything they have both been through and I felt as though they were drawn to each other. Maybe 3rd season??
