At the time Rogue One rewrited all the original canon about the real heros of the first StarWars (the Bothan aliens) with an all human cast, Luc open a much less human-centered space society where humans are just a part of a bigger world of thousands races. It is refreshing to see a more positive tone especially after the last days when Americans voted for a bully totalitarian president who think global warming is just an hoax and creationism is the real science....

The Bothans died to get the plans of the SECOND Death Star, not the first. The "many Bothans..." line comes from Return of the Jedi. So no re-writing there.
