Gee, do they all wear American hats now?

I notice some are wearing American cowboy hats and ballcaps. They used to wear bush hats, native to the outback when they were on the trail. Guess America has pushed globalization pretty far, huh?

reply

I am pretty sure they were all akubras but akubras have changed with fashion over the years. Stetsons and Akubras were pretty much made around the same time all they are are wide brimmed hats to shade from the sun. They were making these kinds of hats since the 1300's so America hasn't exactly got a patent on it.

reply

No they weren't all wearing bush hats (akubras) and that was what was noticeable about the whole thing. Had the film been made 15 or 20 years ago, we would've seen that.

Just another point in America's monopolization of film around the globe. They can't even use their own distinctive styles anymore.

You're right that some of the hats were Resistol (Jay wore a Resistol Dakota straw hat) but there was a huge mix of Akubras and other hats. They were also wearing jeans, had a lot of American guns, and ate hamburgers, all which Australians have been wearing, eating and shooting not just within the past 15-20 years and not just in films.

Have a look at this youtube video of an explanation of a photo taken at Warwick Qld at the rough riders championship. Look at their hats the Australian champions are wearing and this photo was taken in 1961. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7DutSgQGSI

Australia has changed over the past century so has fashion, including hats. Unless they are doing a period drama, I don't see the problem that they are wearing hats like any other Australian in the 00's wears. I also think baseball caps were beginning to become popular in the 1980's as it did everywhere around the world.

Dude, that's sad, really sad...

Nobody wears their own distinctive styles anymore in general. Everyone wants to wear generic American clothes and they try to look as indistinguishable from each other as possible. Not just in Australia, either...

When I was in the UK in the 1980s, the Brits still had their own distinctive sense of fashion. I hardly saw anybody casually wearing tennis shoes unless they were going to the gym or participating in some athletic event. And baseball hats were unknown until the mid-late 90s. The Brits don't even play baseball! Never saw any of that on my numerous trips over there back then. Now, everybody looks like a slob.

Everything looks the same and I don't think that's a good thing.

reply

Do Brit soldiers ever wear baseball type hats like US military does?

reply

As an American (well kind of- I live in Hawaii) I find the homogenization of cultures to be sad, also. You don't have a corner on being disappointed with humanity. But honestly, your disappointment is misguided. You should be disappointed in all of the people from other nations who adopt American fashions, as most of us "yanks" aren't asking anything of anyone else- we love other cultures, and appreciate the beautiful parts of all kinds of cultures.

That being said, the writer and director, Ivan Sen, was raised by a mother who was Aboriginal and father who was European. He was raised in Inverell, New South Wales, Australia, growing up in Tamworth and Inverell. Maybe you should write him about it. Cheers! :)

I am disappointed. However I don't think I have a monopoly on all this. It's just something I noticed. Another effect of globalization more than anything. Otherwise your statement sounds cloying and ridiculous.

Oh- I worked up in Western Wyoming for about six years, and most real American cowboys don't wear the fancy cowboy hats when they ride or work- just a floppy beat up old duster. Fancy cowboy hats up there are for going out on Friday night. They do wear baseball type caps though- but mostly with logos from feed stores and local companies on them.

Having lived in the UK, the 80s was a period many people would rather forget in terms of fashion and music. I started wearing tennis shoes in the early 70s. Do you have to play baseball to be allowed to wear baseball hats, not that I ever wore one. I don't look like a slob, thank you very much.

Gee, sounds like I hit a nerve. Too close to home, eh? 

In this film it works especially on the Jay Swann character. He is more reminiscent of an indigenous cowboy than he is adopting the white Australian dress of the people who for the most part are either against him or place little or no value in his investigation.

I was wondering about Jay's hatband. Are those tiny international flags arranged there?
