The Eye of Apollo

Well 5 'father brown' episodes , 4 of which are named stories in the Canon and it would have been far better for the series if they had actually followed the original story line.
I don't know why the writers think they can produce a better mystery than the Master GKC, but in moving away from the original text, they have produce a father brown soap opera, with simple, predictable plots and one dimensional characters. Father Brown does not need groupies to solve the murders in the books, so why does he have these people in this very poor offering.
No real thought have gone into this project, I have wasted 5 hours hoping for some entertainment only to be disappointed

it seemed much longer, like waiting at the dentist :-)

I honestly think that you should stop watching it if you hate it so much. Try Ripper Street on BBC one, it might be more to your liking.

reply

you might be right, however we now have 4 more 'new' episodes before we finally end with the blue cross, and flambeau must finally appear. Expect to see him a a cockney dwarf who stutters, in keeping with the other character fits we have see in the other episodes

Or reruns of Hee-Haw! -:)

Perhaps it's time to stop making Father Brown into a TV series. This series is a travesty and cannot persuade anyone to read the original stories.
Claiming only to use "a Character created by ...", the series takes the stories and does its best to ruin them.
The police man is an idiot, though the actor obviously doesn't care.
Poor Father Brown looks as if he remembers what the plot really was and is wondering what on earth is going on.
As for the housekeeper, it's a pity some-one doesn't kill her.
Please, please leave Father Brown stories where they belong, on the printed page.

Agree!

I thought I was the only one that hated this travesty. It doesn't do any justice to Chesterton.

Well, the new interpretation of Sherlock Holmes doesn't follow the original source either. Apparently enough viewers appreciate that or otherwise neither viewers nor BBC would ask for more.

Other than the clerical errors pointed out in other posts, Father Brown is a very congenial character and I especially like how he rides his bike. However, there doesn't seem to be much chemistry between him and the others. Perhaps this problem would be solved if they had stuck to the original characterizations found in the books.

I have to disagree. my first exposure to Father Brown was the BBC version starring Mark Williams. I have not had the benefit of reading the original stories, and I find it enjoyable. And it absolutely persuaded me to seek the original stories. I will be reading them soon. Based on other comments, I'm sure I'll find the discrepancies they cite. But such discrepancies rarely impair my enjoyment of a film or TV adaptation (emphasis on the word, "adaptation"). And I'm fairly sure that there are plenty of other satisfied viewers out there who shared my experience.

The story is one of the best short stories ever written IMHO with a brilliant ending. I love the adaptation done for the 1974 series.

How did they change the storyline for this series?

Almost completley different - a few examples.

1 Kalon throws his victim out of a window. Nothing whatsoever to do with elevators.
2 Kalon has lots of followers who live with him in the cult's HQ.
3 Flambeau doesn't appear.

Thanks! I'm not bothered by # 2 and 3, but point # 1 sounds like a disappointment. The whole point of the elevator was that he wasn't present at the time of the murder. The murder was done indirectly. That's what makes the story so great, IMHO.

Agreed the series leaves me pretty underwhelmed. Mark Williams is not bad, and I liked Hugo Speer, but the new inspector character leaves me cold. The stories are totally run-of-the-mill, and the show really kind of looks as if it had 'made for American export' written all over it.

I'd much prefer our PBS station bring back the Britcoms this show replaced them with.
